ok so this is officially a call for any help yall are willing to give
I'm looking for neat tricks tumblr can do that allow to host an ARG here. anything you can think of that could be considered a tumblr-unique "mechanic" for a game
so far, the only things I've figured out:
I could, theoretically, edit the blog's HTML. however, if there's a way to find text I hide in there, either I've been hiding my text wrong or it can't be viewed from the outside. If the latter is the case, it'll have to be used solely as a plot device, because other people can't see it, but the blog runner would see it if they edit their blog's HTML, which I would need an excuse for them to do anyways
Apparently if I save a link to a blog/post on the wayback machine it can be saved after being deleted? That's not really a tumblr-unique thing, but it is a solid game mechanic I can use, since it allows me to use dates as codes and vice versa (either a real post date is used to decode a puzzle, or a puzzle leads to a date that goes into the wayback machine)
Just the classic old videos and picture uploads. Not sure I like this much at all, tbh. Like sure ok blog-runner will make posts with like. doodles they make and stuff. because I'm aiming for "realistic gen z adult who has a tumblr" and I've yet to see a blog that regularly posts that never uploaded a single picture on. even if the pictures are art, still picture. On the one hand, this allows for easy integration of codes (like.. I can straight up pull a scott cawthon and do a brightening images up thing. or put things in the edges of pictures or whatever). On the other hand... that kinda sucks? like I want my main drive for this ARG to be "tumblr arg with the themes I like in stories" and that does require the "tumblr" part to participate
I might do a few things with like. making the likes visible on both blogs I'll run for this arg, but that requires me to put them both separately to my own account which is inconvenient (idk if its even allowed on tumblr at all tbh) but also the specific reasoning for it to happen would be spoilers to explain right now, and the only way to have it be something the audience would figure out would be if I made the main blog like everything the other blog made, and that would literally only work so long as my posts on that secondary blog have less than 10 likes (because after that nobody scrolls all the way down. tbh I dont think anyone looks at likes on posts anyways but it is there if I want it)....
Asks are a tumblr mechanic, but since it requires two people (or for me to go on anon) and always always leads to just. a post. that's not something I have figured out how to use as a puzzle mechanic. mayybe a plot device of the "my account got taken over by the Mysterious Entity That Knows Things But Only Speaks In Riddles" trope variety. but literally what for. maybe also a good lead into layer 2 but I did want layer 1 solvable without layer 2 interaction, kinda. like you can be bad at game and still understand the story, and if I made layer 2 part of the main story ppl who havent figured it out would be soo confused. which I dont want.
anyways. if you have other ideas for game mechanics. I'd very much be interested in hearing your thoughts
