So while I was doing my Comics You Should Read meme thing I noticed that all of the "teen" centric Marvel comics have one really awesome thing in common. They're all really diverse. Â
Like these are the "modern/aimed at teens" comics and they include women, POC, and queer people. Â Avengers Academy's team was mainly women, and had three POC on said team (Reptil, Hazmat, and Mettle), Striker was gay, and in the second half of the series they included Ava (another WOC) more women, and Julie who was bisexual. Â There's probably more but I know those were the main. Â Runaways was the same with mostly women leading the team, two POC and another queer character (well two technically even if Xavin isn't a part of the team anymore sobs). Â
Then you have Young Avengers the big juggernut of the three. Â And I'm really glad that in the new Marvel Now! series they're going to include Prodigy to add another POC to the team along with America. Â Now we just need to bring back Eli why oh why can't you use him Kieron?
I like these books because they feel much more modern cause they're representing what a "modern" or rather "real" group of people looks like. Â It's not longer the FRIENDS era where everyone is white and straight (no matter what GIRLS might lead you to believe). Â And I really enjoy that about Marvel's teen books. Â Even if some of their other books could use the same treatment. Â But if I compare it to DC's major teen book, Teen Titans, well, I think Marvel wins this one.Â
