Arbetsformedlingen (Public Employment Service) is Sweden’s largest employment agency. Almost anyone who needs a job (or is looking to fill jobs) goes through it. In December 2010, due to the large numbers of refugees in the country, the PES began the Integration and Introduction Program, headed by Johan Nylander (pictured), who grew up in the diverse city of Sodertalje (which we will visit tomorrow).
Through the program, refugees learn Swedish and local customs while being trained for jobs in municipalities. After leaving the program, which lasts about two years, 26 percent of those refugees enrolled are working or studying in Sweden. Nearly 39,000 refugees have gone through the program. Nylander admits it still needs improvement, but says good job training for this rush of new refugees here can be a boon for the future. “Most refugees are young, and the Swedish population is aging,” he said. “Here we could have an entire workforce-in-training.” - Joanna Kakissis @joannakakissis
