Final Reflection
This is final interview with Sylvia Sohyun Lee, Jewellery designer whose working in one of the raising Jewellery company in Korea. She had a hearing disability since she was 3 years old and she was my best friend in Korea since primary school student which is more than half of years of my age! When I couldn't reach my first and second person, I was bit worried and disappointed but when I interview her, we both actually enjoyed the process and I was even surprised because I thought I knew her well in personally but I could learn few different things from her! Like she mentioned that she was uncomfortable with people's eye when she wearing hearing aid so she tried herself to not get those eyes. When I read this part I was so heartbroken as I couldn't realise that for so long even though we're best friends and when she said that she started to go overseas from her first Australia trip, I was so happy about it because she came here with me right after I went to Korea after Yr 12 HSC and same as her in Korea and she stayed here about 2 weeks at my place. I didn't know that she was inspired in a lot of ways on her life and her design works so I was really happy to hear that! When I design her interview with her nature collection, I wanted to give hope to other hearing-impaired people through her life story and her working experiences as she overcomes her frustrations and succeeds so I designed the interview like seed packet style as seed gives a hope of nature. I also wanted to give hope to my audience who's going to read the interview inside so when they open the seed packet, they will see the 6 cards that represent the beauty of nature through full sized image of her beautifully worked designs that contain beauty of nature in her each work that's been professionally taken so those photograph of nature collection represent hope of nature and hidden treasure of nature. The front page of the seed packet is with plants that she used one of the elements for her work with muted colours. I put 4 different languages which are English, Korean, Chinese and Sign language as the audience is going to be multicultural people in Australia and I also put sign language as one of the typeface forms like other languages to blend all together so that sign language shows that it's part of our daily languages as well. Then I blended with my watercolour painting with the texts so that some parts of typefaces are hidden on the plants and look like it's growing under the typefaces and barely wrap the typefaces so that looks like they are blended each other as she blended nature into her jewellery design, I also wanted to blend the typography with nature in communication or graphic design way in her style!
This project took me a lot of steps to get the final piece as I couldn't think about my own style. I had to make the presentation form within her styles and I had to give hope to the audience through the interview and the "Jewellery Packet" design to make them want to read. As I was also an audience for other interviews, I sometimes skip it because it's too long and tight without any spaces so I wanted to make it using 2 senses of our body which are tactile impression and visual impression so they can read it and also touch it. As Sylvia told me that her other senses are developed than others to sense the situations well since she lost her hearing so I considered about other hearing-impaired people whose going to read my interview!
After I finished my final photograph and send to Sylvia, her first response was “Ara! This is totally my style! I love your design! You look like a professional interviewer” and she uploaded on facebook :) I’m so happy that she liked it and this project developed me even further as design student to understand and think about audiences and the person who I’m going to interview! :)
