Surah Ar-Rahman begins with one word. Ar-Rahman, an ayah (verse) all by itself. Allah (swt) chose to begin the surah with Ar-Rahman because of its familiarity to muslims and to insist on deep reflection. One word having its own verse? It must hold a very significant meaning. The common translation of Ar-Rahman is mercy, however the english language is not able to correctly identify its true meaning. Ar-Rahman originates from the arabic term ar-rahm, which is defined as a mother’s womb. Despite the fact that the child has yet to know or love it’s mother, she is still taking care of the unborn child in every way possible. The most unconditional form of love. Allah (swt) is Ar-Rahman, taking care of you and loving you, even when you forget him. Allah (swt) will never leave you. Not only is Ar-Rahman defined as Allah’s (swt) wholehearted love, but it is also defined as “now.” Allah (swt) loves you NOW, he is taking care of you NOW, when you ask for his help, he is helping you NOW. As you read the surah, you should realize that Allah is there with you, always.
Surah Ar-Rahman was revealed during the Makkan period, when the people of Quraish were ignorant and stubborn upon what Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had revealed to them. Allah (swt) was angry at the Quraish people for their arrogance, but when Allah is angry, he still loves you. That is when he revealed Surah Ar-Rahman, to end everyone’s uncertainty and hesitation. Surah Ar-Rahman describes all the wonders and surroundings that Allah (swt) has provided for mankind. From the sunrise and sunset to the two seas that lay side by side but never transgress, all created by Allah (swt).
When you are speaking to someone stubborn, it is only obvious that you would have to continuously repeat the same thing over and over again until they finally listen. In Surah Ar-Rahman, after each description, Allah (swt) repeats, exactly 31 times out of the 78 verses: “Fabi-ayyi ala-i rabbikuma tukaththibani” (Then which of the favour of your Lord will ye deny?)
How amazing? The simplicity and wisdom of Allah (swt) always has me in awe.
I encourage you all to listen and follow along with the translations.
