Regalecusmon!!!!!
Regalecusmon is a recently-introduced Ultimate-level Aquatic Digimon, described as an overwhelmingly powerful pirate that assaults and loots the territories of other Digimon and rules the abyss of the Net Ocean (presumably) as an apex predator. Its sword is apparently made from the severed horn of Zudomon (y’know, the Perfect form of Gomamon), which is both rad and intimidating. Plus it’s got that apparently-electrified pincer thing too. This guy’s pretty cool!!!!
The name Regalecus is derived from a genus of oarfish, appropriate given the massive oarfish posterior it has hanging off the back of its head. Some of you may be familiar with oarfish through Animal Crossing, or more pertinently as the basis of Milotic, but long story short they’re basically really long fish – actually the longest known bony fish alive! They’re also really pretty, though this dude obviously isn’t interested in that aspect, unlike Milotic. You don’t see oarfish implemented in character designs often, and certainly not on humanoid ones, so it feels incredibly fresh even if humanoid designs are appallingly common amongst Ultimate-level Digimon for the past many, many, MANY years.
That’s actually the one significant criticism to be made of Regalecusmon: as unique as its basis may be, it’s still yet another humanoid. And whilst it is certainly respectable as humanoids go, it still kinda prevents me from having any real personal investment in it.
May as well talk about its virtual pet sprite too! Virtual pets are Digimon’s original genre, and they’re how most new Digimon are formally introduced to the franchise, including this one. Most sprites are too small to really show any level of recognisable detail, though Regalecusmon’s distinctive head lends it a rather unique silhouette that stands out amongst other humanoids.
Regalecusmon is certainly a neato new fish Digimon, and one that I can definitely respect. Particularly given how scarce fish dudes tend to be, relatively speaking. And it’s an oarfish, even! Still, as yet another humanoid Ultimate, it’s hard to get overly excited about it.
