They said, “Yeah, somebody died in the pool.” I said something along the lines of, “Who was it?” or “How?” and they said, “They have to find the body, they’re searching for it now.” “How long will it take?” “12 hours.”
A little while later, there was a plastic bag rolling across the playground. I bent down to pick it up and held it. A boy came over and said “You should put it over your head.” I did, turning it upside down and placing it over my head. The care lady that day ran over and half-yelled, half-pleaded, Shaun, don’t put that over your head. I asked why not and she said, “Because you’ll suffocate.”
I learned early on the nature of society as a patriarchy. The boys were playing dodgeball and it was 3 on 3. Three older boys were on one side and I was with 2 younger boys. There must have been a 3 year difference between each of them and the boys on the other side. I associate this, now with the Holden Caulfield quote, “Game, my ass. Some game. If you get on the side where all the hot-shots are, then it’s a game, all right—I’ll admit that. But if you get on the other side, where there aren’t any hot-shots, then what’s a game about it?”
I spent a good 20 minutes of my youth being harried by stinging balls thrown at me that day.
I was an accomplished thief. I stole right from under people’s noses, saying you’ve got something there and flicking their nose. They’d invariably say “No, I don’t!” to which I’d say, “Exactly.” That’s all that need be said about that. I’m not proud of it, though I thought levity might aid the story of my ascension in the Thieves guild. It was bad. It started when I saw a red gavel/red hammer. It was really a hammer but I saw it and thought to myself, “Now that, there, is a tool worthy of being played with. Imagine what all one could do with it?” The whole world looked like nails with that hammer sitting there and, honestly: What good are nails without a wooden red hammer? I thought to steal it for myself. For the communal good. I placed my hand on it and found the inner voice that would forever haunt me. “Shaun, you’ve got to put the hammer back, playtime’s over.”
