why tf did truedy win unpretty rapstar!?!?
āFor a while, I really wanted to get a tattoo of one of Rapunzelās lanterns and one that says ohana but Iāve since learned how problematic and appropriative that would be (not to mention that it wouldnāt even be the proper spelling of āohana!) and Iām glad my hesitation about getting a tattoo made me wait long enough to learn those thingsā
If you are a white person who grows up in a predominantly black area, surrounded by black culture, is it appropriative if you adopt the culture/dress/language throughout your life?
Iām not sure if Iām the best person to ask this to tbh but hereās my take on it.Ā
I think it can be for sure. Ā White people who adopt the culture/dress/language of minorities are always walking a fine line.
Iāve noticed that a lot of white people who grew up in a predominantly minority area seem to believe that they are exempt from experiencing white privilege when that is not the case at all. Ā
They think because they grew up surrounded by that culture they are a part of it, which is frankly incorrect and offensive. No matter how many āblack friendsā you have, you will never be black and there needs to be recognition that they know there are some part of minority culture they will never be able to experience, such as prejudice, discrimination and racism. Ā
What many white people who appropriate anotherās culture fail to realize is that they get all the āfunā parts of it without any of the backlash.Ā
I hope I explained myselfā¦I feel like I kind of rambled a bit with this.Ā
