umm this got long and kind of out of hand. but rly, i tried to make this seem believable from an endgame standpoint? i originally had nadia, julian, and asra there but asra was about to dropkick lucio off the cliff so i switched it up.
the prologue to ‘my goat and me’ an au where yuli and lucio have to share a body
“Very well,” the Devil conceded. To continue to fight against another Arcana would be a wasted effort. “I will take my claim and we will leave for my realm. The other Arcana will see to it that I do not overstep my boundaries again.” Beside him, wrapped in red-hot chains, was a weak and plague-eyed Lucio.
Yuli's own scowl deepened as she stepped forward. The Devil took a step back, closer to the edge of the cliff of the Fool’s realm. “You will return alone. Lucio will stay.” The Devil’s eyes widened. Even Lucio looked up, barely able to meet her gaze, though Yuli wasn’t sure if it was out of exhaustion or pride.
The Devil sneered and tightened the chain and Lucio gave a rattling gasp. “We had a bargain. Besides, it’ll be doing you a favor, not having to deal with him anymore. Your beloved city will prosper without her greedy, incompetent Count.”
Another step forward, and she met the Devil’s grin with a scowl. “You’ll release him and he will return with me. He’s an idiot, yes, but he doesn’t deserve to be stuck with you for all of eternity. He deserves a chance to grow and change.”
As Yuli spoke, Lucio seemed to shrink more and more in the Devil’s bonds. It wasn’t exhaustion or pride that made him unable to face her, she realized. It was shame.
“You would sentence him to an eternity of wandering Vesuvia as a wraith? Dear Yuli, I thought you knew compassion more than that.” And the Devil could not lie.
Her brows furrowed and she pouted as she thought. “I didn’t - he would still be a ghost?”
And the Devil looked at her like he was a millennia-old creature and she was a simple child. “If I could make him a body, why, pray tell, would you and he be fighting over yours?” More truth and Yuli did feel every bit the foolish child. “Though I suppose,” and Yuli didn’t like his tone, “if you were to remain in the Arcana’s realms, your body would be free for him to use. Is that your plan?”
Yuli would, she knew it in a heartbeat. Would give up her body, the loves of her life, to keep Lucio from literal hell or a restless afterlife. Her conscience could not allow her to enjoy her own life, knowing what awaited him. But the grief she would cause. She couldn’t allow that either. There had to be something...
“We could share.” The Devil and Lucio gave her near-identical looks of confusion. “I’ve done spirit possessions before; it would be like that, wouldn’t it? Only Lucio would be more of a roommate than a visitor, I suppose.”
“You would really offer that to him?” And the pointed claw at Lucio, the look of disgust on the Devil’s muzzle, made Yuli chuckle despite the seriousness of the situation.
“Only if he would accept. I’m afraid it’s the best I can offer.”
Lucio shuffled in his chains, his red-grey eyes wild in his fervor. “I accept.”
Everything went black.
