Have someone who doesn’t know you well read your resume. See if they have any questions about it. If anything is unclear to them, it will probably be unclear to us too.

Write about what you love most, not what you think we’ll love most.

Make sure your resume on the Common App states the name of the club and not just what you did it in. You’d be surprised how often this mistake is made.

Whatever you’d say... you probably want to talk about that in your application somewhere.

If you hear about a “cool” way to write your essay (i.e. “Recipe of Me), it means we’ve already read hundreds of them. Don’t be gimmicky. Be authentic.

We don’t expect you to be an expert in the major you’re applying to, but we do expect you to be able to articulate why you’re passionate about it.

Don’t say that you want to be a doctor because you “want to help people”. Every occupation other than super villain helps people in some way. Tell us why you want to help people in this SPECIFIC way.

Tell us what you love, but don’t tell us just one thing. If you write about soccer in your essay, and your resume is mainly soccer teams, soccer coaching, soccer fundraising, etc., we don’t get to learn much about you.
