Apples drop from the tree when ripe because of 2 hormones auxin and ethylene with antagonistic effects on the abscission zone in the stem. Auxin is produced in the fruit pips inhibiting abscission. Ethylene is produced in the fruit flesh and controlled by abscisic
acid and inhibits auxin production. Abscisic acid production in apple fruit peel and flesh is stimulated by environmental stresses like cold and drought, as well as by interactions with sugars. The process culminates in the breakdown of cell walls in the abscission zone by enzymes like polygalacturonase and cellulase, leading to the apple’s detachment. No one told this roadside wilding! Now Spring and apples are still well attached some withered but other surprisingly edible!
