“And then she was just all over me, and I swear I thought I was going to blow my load in the back of her dad’s expensive fucking car.”
Laughter filled the crackling air, disrupting the normally calm camping spot. It was still a bit too cold for normal people to even consider camping, but the seven college boys gathered around the fire had done way crazier things during their time together. This had actually become an annual thing, a way to catch their breaths in the middle of the giant workload that came with college. Link enjoyed it, he definitely did. It was just that, well, he got cold really easily. The fire helped, but it hadn’t really been enough. Which is how he had ended up wearing a hoodie that was far too big for him and had a scent attached to it that made his stomach feel all – tingly.
Greg tossed a crumbled can of beer over their heads and chuckled, momentarily distracted from his story as he looked over.
“We could fit two of you in there, Neal.”
Link didn’t have time to find a good comeback before he felt the hood being lifted over his head, and a strong arm squeezing his shoulders.
“Leave him alone man, he was getting chilly.”
The guys snickered, and Link frowned, peering up at Rhett judgmentally from behind the giant piece of fabric covering most of his face. Rhett just sent him a grin and adjusted the hood once more, pulling it back from his face. His hand lingered against the back of his head for a moment before he dropped it and rested his elbows on his thighs. Link released a quiet breath and watched the fire, tuning out the sounds of the other guys as he continued to breathe in the woodsy scent that clung to Rhett’s hoodie. He was considering feigning the need for an early night, when he felt Rhett’s arm press a bit harder against his own, obviously wanting his attention.
“Wanna head down to the river?”
The words were low and obviously not directed to anyone but him, which made that tingling sensation in his belly intensify. It was something about the way Rhett would do that; focus on only him even when they were around other people - that always made him feel really happy.
So happy, in fact, that he didn’t actually consider what they would be doing down at the river before Rhett was grabbing his t-shirt from behind his neck, pulling it up and over his head. Surprise combined with an embarrassing surge of excitement made Link feel slightly dizzy, and he stayed frozen, hands buried in the warm pockets of the hoodie as he stared at his best friend getting undressed before his eyes. Had he somehow fallen asleep right there on the logs? Was he going to wake up drooling on Rhett’s shoulder with the guys laughing at his ability to basically pass out anywhere?
Rhett looked over his shoulder with a wide grin, and the moonlight seemed to fall just right, casting only a light shadow across his face.
“What does it look like I’m doing?”
Link’s eyes widened as the next part appeared to happen in slow motion, and he was pretty sure he forgot the simple act of breathing as he watched Rhett’s pale butt checks wiggle as he ran into the dark water. Rooted to the spot, he couldn’t do anything but stare as Rhett dove under before coming back up, still visible thanks to the moonlight coming from between the trees above them.
It took him a moment to realize that his hands were clutched into fists, as tense as the rest of his body. The tingling sensation in his stomach was now a flame, licking at his insides and creating a tight feeling in his pants. Abort mission. Abort mission.
“Come on, take your stuff off and come in!”
“I-I was cold in font of the fire,” he found himself calling out, his voice slightly high pitched, “and you want me t-to, skinny dip?!”
Rhett’s laugh echoed in the otherwise silent space.
“It’s not that cold in here. Besides, I know my shirt helped, you stopped shivering ages ago.”
“And now you want me to start again?!”
Link felt himself start to sweat, his heart pounding almost painfully against his ribcage. Because he knew Rhett, he knew himself. He knew that he was fucking awful at denying him anything. If Rhett had an idea, he was always right behind him. That was how this thing worked. Rhett knew it too, and that was why it made him so freaking nervous.
Swallowing thickly, he reached for the hem off Rhett’s hoodie, carefully pulling it off his smaller frame. He didn’t want to just toss it on the ground like Rhett had done to his stuff, so he gently placed it on a nearby rock, begging that some of the heat would stay wrapped around him even as he reached for his long sleeved shirt. He could hear the splashing from the river but avoided looking right towards Rhett as his shirt joined the hoodie. His fingers trembled as they neared his jeans, a low, shaky exhale leaving his lips as he tried to ignore the state of his swollen cock as he unzipped and quickly wriggled them down his hips. Grateful that Rhett was still far enough away to not be aware, he turned away to take a couple of calming breaths.
Opening his eyes, he tossed the jeans on the pile of clothes before he turned and ran towards the water, his boxers still comfortably clutched to his hips. The water was freezing, and he regretted the decision instantly.
“Rhett! Fucking hell man, it’s so cold!”
Rhett’s laughter was suddenly really close, and Link turned around in the water to find him swimming towards him.
“Just because I’m not a walking furnace doesn’t make me the weird one! It’s far too early to swim, Rhett. I’m – hell – we’re gonna get a cold.”
“Not if I keep you warm,” Rhett stated as he reached him, his voice teasing but soft, quite different from the one he usually used when they had one of their play fights. Link felt his own breath hitch, partly because of the cold water but mostly caused by the way Rhett was looking at him. For a second he had forgotten about the fact that they were both, supposedly, naked but now the realization nearly made him swallow a mouthful of water as he forgot to stay afloat. Rhett’s hands grasped onto his hips beneath the water, keeping him steady, and Link choked out a breath as he stared up at Rhett’s eyes, not remembering the last time they were so close. They never really were, cause Rhett was always towering over him. Now he wasn’t though, he was close enough to touch and his face was only a few inches from his own and he was looking at him like he longed for something and was it – was it him?
He found himself desperate to ask, to finally bring it up, to see if he wasn’t alone. If Rhett had felt things changing between them too. If college was opening up sides of him he hadn’t even considered, hadn’t been allowed to. He wanted to ask, but he found himself unable to speak, too distracted by the way Rhett’s hot breath felt against his own, by the way his hands were still gripping his hips. He shuddered when he felt one finger gently hooking into the hem of his boxers, eyelids dropping closed as Rhett murmured, “you cheated,” against his lips, and then they were kissing and it was the answer to the question he hadn’t been able to ask.
