The value proposition
"Dreams will get you nowhere, a good kick in the pants will take you a long way."
A value proposition is made out of a combination of a few elements: the headline, the subheadline, the image or video, and a few bullet points. All these elements help users understand in just a few seconds what the website is about.
Whenever I create a new value prop, I ask myself these 4 questions:
Is it clear enough?
All elements should be consistent:
- The headline has to attract the user's attention;
- The subheadline should briefly describe what the business is about;
- The image should be so descriptive that people will instantly understand what the business is about.
2. Is it easy to understand?
Metaphors are great when you write a novel or poem, but they have nothing to do with a value proposition. At the same time, technical or hard to read words are only going to resonate with specialists, not your first time visitor.
In the vast majority of cases, nobody wants to know how your business is working, but rather how it can help them. A good way to test if your value prop is easy to understand is to show it to your grandma. If she understands what the website is about in a few seconds, you are good to go.
3. Does it resonate with my ideal customer?
Each of us is unique in our own way, but we do have a lot of things in common. Remember, your customers are human too. Based on what you sell, a specific demographic will be more interested than any other one. Think of what type of message resonates best with them and adapt your value proposition (and your whole website) around it.
4. Does it describe my strongest selling points?
There is a lot of competition in almost every niche nowadays. However, your business is unique, as are all the other ones. Your value proposition should immediately tell users why they should buy from you, and not from your competition. Maybe you ship your orders in 1 day, or maybe your software has the easiest to use user interface.
