A Place for Me
Somewhere there's a place for me. A place to just be me. Maybe that's here, in my own little corner. Where nobody cares who I am or what I am, because I have no name. Well, not the actual name on my birth certificate. And just some vague description.
Isn't it lovely? I never thought I would say such a thing. Most of my life I cried because nobody cared. Woe is me! Nobody cares! Even very recently. Now they care too much. Is there no such thing as balance? Seriously!
And to be in a place in the dark of night, where all is quiet except for the hum of my husband's oxygen equipment and I can be unapologetically me... Reading Psalms for Sukkot, then binge watching old 1960s episodes of Twilight Zone, videos of Mr. PopZit, talking parrots, adoring pictures of fluffy fur balls, or typing out my thoughts on my least known of social media account away from the clamor of the other one... is pure peace.
No one thinks I'm too religious, not religious enough, too liberal, too conservative, too loud, too quiet, too positive, too negative... Nobody flipping cares! It's beautiful! Why didn't I appreciate it before?
A place for me. A place to just be me. A place to breathe. A place where I can say, "Whoever you are, wherever you are, whatever you are... I don't care. I really don't care. Not because I don't care about you as a human being, I just don't care about judging you based on external appearances or which team you're cheering on".
I don't care who you voted for. I'm sure you had your reasons. It doesn't really matter whether I think they were good reasons or not. They were good reasons to you and you were the one voting (or not, as the case may be) on YOUR ballot. I don't care what religion, or lack of, you choose. You have your reasons for that too, that have nothing to do with me. I don't care about your gender or sexuality preferences. I'm not in your bedroom, your bathroom, at your doctor appointments, and I don't want to be. I don't belong there.
What I do care about is what I care about for myself... If we all just try to be good people. That's it. And that maybe we can each have that place to be unapologetically ourselves. Where nobody cares. Nobody is hurt, angry or judging, wanting us to be the way they think we should be. Where people aren't expecting everyone else to be clones of themselves. A place for you to be you and me to be me and we all live in peace and harmony.
