Y/N POKED AT the kimchi on her lunch tray, the tangy scent filling the air. The table she'd chosen today was unusually large, though the only side in use was the one where she sat, her lunch laid out in front of her. She glanced around the bustling cafeteria, her gaze momentarily wandering before she exhaled a soft sigh. A stray lock of her curtain bangs lifted, caught by a gust of air, only to settle back on her forehead with a lazy flop.
Her eyes shifted toward On-Jo, a girl from her grade who sat across the room with her best friend, I-Sak. The two were inseparable, as they always had been, laughing together in a bubble of their own world. Y/N watched them with a quiet longing, her gaze softening as she silently observed the effortless bond they shared. In moments like this, she couldnāt help but envy On-Jo. Through her eyes, Y/N vicariously experienced the life she had always dreamed ofāone filled with laughter, friendship, shopping trips, gossiping, and everything that had seemed just out of reach.
Unbeknownst to Y/N, across the room, Cheong-Sanāa boy from her gradeāhad been watching her for far longer than he intended. His eyes followed her movements with an intensity that made it impossible for him to look away. He had admired her from a distance, noticing the small details: the way she brushed her hair away with an absent flick, the soft sighs that escaped her lips when she thought no one was looking. Her stillness now only seemed to draw him in further, the quiet aura around her captivating in a way he couldnāt quite place.
His friends had picked up on it immediately, of course. Theyād caught the way his gaze lingered, and every teasing comment only made him more self-conscious. As Y/N sat, lost in her own world, Cheong-Sanās friends shot knowing looks his way, raising their eyebrows as they nudged him with playful smirks. "Still not going to talk to her?" theyād teased. "You just gonna stare all day?"
He dismissed them with a wave, his lips twisting into a scoff that didnāt quite mask the heat creeping up his neck. "Shut up," he muttered under his breath, trying to ignore the ache in his chest that had grown each time Y/N remained oblivious to his attention. His focus, however, never left her, the sound of her sigh mingling with the noise of the cafeteria. It was as if the rest of the world had faded away, leaving only her in the center of his thoughts.
Her reverie was abruptly shattered by the sharp, frantic sound of rapid footsteps. Y/N's head snapped toward the glass doors at the far end of the cafeteria. Panic spread quickly as a flood of students burst through the entrance, their screams echoing through the hall. They moved in a chaotic frenzy, bumping into each other as fear rippled through the room. The opposite doors were similarly overwhelmed, students spilling through without even noticing the commotion at the other side.
Still frozen in place, Y/N swung her legs over the bench, her feet lightly touching the floor as she turned toward the door. She remained seated, staring blankly at the chaos unfolding, the surreal atmosphere weighing heavily on her senses.
Crack. Crack. Crack. The sound of glass splintering echoed through the cafeteria, each sharp break amplifying the panic in the air. Y/N's heart raced as the weight of the screaming students pressing against the doors became too much. The glass shattered with a loud crash, sending the students nearest to it tumbling in a pile. Those behind them surged forward, their frantic scramble pushing everyone into a frenzy.
Y/N's breath hitched. She stood up shakily, her legs unsteady beneath her. She needed to do something, anythingābut her body refused to cooperate. She froze in the middle of the aisle, wide-eyed, her mouth agape as the chaos unfolded before her.
A student was on the ground, another on top of him, their movements erratic and uncoordinated, like something had taken hold of them. Y/N stumbled back, her hands gripping the table for support as the unsettling scene unfolded. More students, faces filled with panic and confusion, staggered past her, eyes wild and frantic.
The cafeteria had become a madhouse, a swirl of fear and desperation. Y/N could hear the distant shouts and screams, but it felt like the world had closed in around her, the air thick with a sense of dread she couldnāt shake.
Students raced past her, shoving and scrambling in every direction. She was knocked off balance and fell to the floor, landing with a soft thud. A yelp escaped her as she quickly scrambled to her feet. The room was in utter chaos, and she couldnāt make sense of it. A girl, who had been running just moments ago, turned toward her. Blood smeared across her face, and her eyes were wide, unfocused. She moved toward Y/N with jerky, unnatural steps, her presence sending a chill down her spine.
Y/N's heart hammered in her chest, but she refused to let fear take over. She wasnāt going to die like this. Not now. Not ever.
She closed her eyes briefly, pulling in a shaky breath, then opened them just in time to see the girl get closer. Without thinking, Y/N grabbed the nearest chair and hurled it toward the girl. It hit the ground with a loud clatter, distracting her just long enough. She didnāt waste a secondāY/N scrambled to her feet and sprinted in the opposite direction, her pulse pounding in her ears.
Suddenly, a strong pair of arms wrapped around Y/N, pulling her away from the chaos of the cafeteria and onto a nearby table. She kicked and screamed, adrenaline surging through her as she fought against the force. But then her eyes locked on the familiar face of Cheong-San, and a sense of relief flooded her.
"Cheong-San, what the hell is happening?" she shouted, her voice barely cutting through the cacophony of screams and panic. All around them, students were being attacked, others scrambling in every direction, faces twisted in fear and confusion. Over Cheong-Sanās shoulder, Y/N could see On-Jo, her expression just as frantic.
Cheong-San didnāt have time to offer anything other than a quick shrug and a hurried, "I donāt know!" before a group of those⦠things charged at them, eyes wild.
Y/N's gaze darted between the two of them. She knew they were just as overwhelmed, just as terrified. Her mind raced. There was no time for hesitation. She scanned the room quickly, her eyes landing on somethingāan exit.
Without a word, she grabbed both of them by the arms and began pulling them toward the window. Cheong-San, understanding immediately, nudged On-Jo ahead and helped her climb through first. Y/N stayed close, pushing through frantic classmates who tried to shove their way out.
The chaos around them was maddening. More studentsāturnedālunged at them, and Cheong-San fought them off with quick, forceful kicks, protecting the others as they made their way toward freedom.
Finally, it was just the two of them left.
Cheong-San looked toward Y/N, determination in his eyes. Without waiting for her to protest, he swiftly lifted her, wrapping his arms around her thighs and hoisting her up, sending her through the window. She scrambled down, landing lightly on her feet.
Moments passed, but Cheong-San hadnāt followed. Her eyes snapped up, and her breath caught in her throat as she saw a student charging toward the windowāa thing, its gaze locked on them.
"Cheong-San! Get over here, now!" Y/N screamed up, her voice desperate.
On-Jo was tugging at her arm, panic rising. "We need to go, Y/N/N!" she urged, but Y/N stubbornly shook her head, refusing to leave without him.
Just then, Cheong-Sanās head appeared through the window, and Y/N pulled him out with everything she had. No sooner had they hit the ground, however, their escape routes were blocked by more of the frenzied students.
Without wasting another moment, Cheong-San grabbed both of them by the arms and pulled them toward the nearest staircase. On-Jo lagged behind, but Y/N gritted her teeth and tugged her forward, refusing to let her fall behind. They had no choice but to keep moving.

After a series of near-death experiences and a frantic dash through obstacles Y/N never imagined herself facing, they finally made it to the relative safety of a classroom. A few other students had already found their way there, including On-Joās best friend. Once again, Y/N was forced to watch as the two girls shared a bond that only best friends could truly understandāsomething she couldnāt quite relate to.
Her attention drifted away from their conversation, her fingers absently playing with the hem of her skirt as she pulled the light pink hood of her zip-up over her head, just reaching her H/C hair.
For a moment, the room fell into a heavy silence, everyone processing what had just happened. Y/N's gaze shifted back toward On-Jo and I-Sak, but her thoughts were interrupted by a shadow looming over her.
Her eyes slowly turned upward, meeting Cheong-Sanās unreadable expression. āKeep staring, and youāll burn a hole through her head,ā he said casually, and Y/N's cheeks flushed a soft pink. Sheād never been caught before, and she didnāt handle it well.
"Hey, mind your own business," she muttered, crossing her arms and glaring out the window, trying to ignore the rising heat in her face. She had perched herself on a desk, with Cheong-San standing right in front of her. The height difference made it impossible for her not to be acutely aware of just how close he was, especially as he stood between her legs.
Noticing her shift in posture, Cheong-San awkwardly stepped back, his eyes glancing down for a brief moment before he hesitantly placed a hand on her upper arm. Y/N's gaze flickered from his hand to his eyes, and she froze. āAre you okay?ā he asked, his voice soft.
Y/N blinked in surprise. She couldnāt remember the last time someone had asked her that. The simple question left her stunned, and for a moment, she couldnāt find her voice. But Cheong-San didnāt seem bothered by her silence, continuing, āIt was really smart thinking of you out there. The window and all.ā
A light breath escaped her, almost like a laugh or a sigh of relief. Someone noticed her. The pink flush on her cheeks deepened to a bright red as she looked up at him, her lips pulling into a genuine smile.
For Cheong-San, it felt like the world slowed down as their eyes locked. Something in her gaze shiftedāthere was a spark in her eyes that caught him off guard, and he wasnāt sure how to respond. Clearing his throat awkwardly, he turned and walked back toward his friends, who immediately began teasing him, patting him on the back.
Y/N's gaze dropped to her deep purple Converse shoes, her legs swinging back and forth as she lost herself in thought.
