Core Design set up a 'National Take Lara to Work Day'. On Friday 4th July 2003, 'Companies are being encouraged to allow employees to take Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness to work to play it for half an hour. This will help to create a relaxed and progressive working environment, which in turn will lead to a higher rate of productivity – everybody wins!'[1]
An official website www.takelaratoworkday.com was set up to provide more information. In fact, 'The ‘Take Lara To Work Day’ was devised following a recent report from the London School of Economics on how creating a happy working environment stimulates the workforce:
Dr. Michael Carroll, Professor of Industry at the University of Bristol [said] "The average employee spends 41% of their life at work which is an especially long time if employees don’t like the work they are doing.
What can we do? One way is to try to make work fun. When you enjoy yourself, you relax, you engage with work in a deeper way, you have more energy and you return home in the evening feeling good.
A “Making Work Fun” day is a reminder that, if we are not careful, enjoyment and fun can disappear from work and leave it lifeless and, indeed, soulless. Combining work and play creates the best of both worlds and provides us with a playfully successful workplace.
Eidos Interactive has taken this report and decided to offer employees the chance to have some fun during a typical 9-5 working day. Playing games relieves stress and stimulates the brain. Working life’s long, play more!"'[2]
