Chapter 1 ~ Pet Piggy
I was 17 at the time, working as a waitress at a little diner on the edge of Koreatown around the corner from my house. I lived about 2 miles away from Koreatown Manhattan. The café was never packed but had a decent amount of customers; mainly Korean but also the usual New York crowd.
My father was Puerto Rican and my mother was Korean but he divorced my mom when I was born and lived on the other side of the state so I only saw him on holidays. I lived with my mom speaking a mix of Korean English and Spanish at home because my parents met in college where my mom minored in Spanish. We lived in a pretty ok apartment building where my mother’s brother and his wife lived a floor below us with their 2 kids.
This summer my days consisted of waking up at 6, getting breakfast, drinking my coffee on the fire escape and then catching a ride with a friend to my job. I’d work from 8 till 1 and then either go home, hang out with friends, or do some shopping.
Today I didn’t know what was in store for me, but I could tell something good was going to happen today. See last night I dreamed my mom brought home a pig for us to have as a pet. My mom always told me “If you dream of a pig that means you will have good luck the next day” Her old Korean superstitions always where bizarre but for some reason dreaming of a pig always did bring me luck.
Chapter 2 ~ I’ll have the eggs with a side of your sweetness
“LI-NA!!! THIS ORDER IS READY!!!” Mr.Kang yelled to me from the kitchen in his heavy Busan accent.
“Thank you, ajussi!” I came and picked up the plate “And here is the next order.” I placed the order in his hand a walked away. I looked out the window as a crack of thunder sounded and it started to rain. I saw people running for shelter outside.
I placed the plate of pie down on the table with the hot coffee next to it in front of the Korean woman a bit older than my mother.
“Here you go Ajumma, enjoy!”
I heard the door bell clank as someone rushed in. He was a man probably 3 or 4 years older than me. He faintly resembled the actor Lee MinHo, but it might have just been his eyes. He was wet from the rain and seemed to be dressed a bit warm for summer. Something about him distracted me and stole my attention almost making me forget to greet him.
I finally snapped back to my senses “Good morning! Welcome to the Kang Diner, sit anywhere and I’ll be right there to take your order.”
“Thanks.” He said with a heartwarming smile sitting at the counter. I walked back to the kitchen real fast to check what I looked like with one of the other waiters Jenna not far behind.
“What are you doing? Don’t you remember that the next customer was for me to wait on?” she said confused.
“I know, I’m sorry but I have to wait on him. There’s something about him. You can have any of my customers for the rest of the day just please let me have this one.” I begged her
She twisted her mouth and walked away “Fine, I get your next customer then!”
“Thank you, unnie!!!!” I called after her, she wasn’t Korean and hated the other waiters used aegyo or called her unnie, but it was all in good fun.
I walked out to where he was at the counter. He was looking at the menu on that was there. He seemed to just radiate a good feeling.
“I’m Li-Na and I’ll be your waiter today. What can I get you?”
He looked up at me with his big dark brown eyes; the way his wavy hair fell around his face was like a work of art.
“I’ll just have the eggs and a coffee.” He said.
“How would you like your coffee?” I tried to write the order but I could feel my hand shake.
“Sweetened, until the sugar wont dissolve anymore” he laughed.
“Just like I like mine.” I smiled and walked away to get his order.
I got his coffee fast so I could see him again. He gives me an odd feeling, but a good kind of odd.
I placed it in front of him. “Anything else, sir?”
“Sir? Wow, I think that’s the first time I’ve been called sir. I’m only 20.” This time when he smiled I noticed his eye smile, it was so charming.
“I’m sorry. What should I call you then?”
“Jason or Yun-Qi.” He smiled warmly at me “What should I call you?”
“Lina, or like what everyone here calls me Li-Na. Yun-Qi… Is that Chinese?”
He sipped his coffee “Ya, my dad said if my mom got to give me an American first name that he got to give me a Chinese middle name. My mom’s Korean and my dad’s Chinese.”
“My mom’s Korean too! My dad is Puerto Rican. My last name is Cruz. No middle name.” I giggled shyly.
“Lina Cruz, a beautiful name for a beautiful girl” he blushed ever so slightly opposed to my cherry red cheeks at the moment. “My last name is Wu. My full names Jason Yun-Qi Wu.”
“Let me go see if your eggs are done” I hurried away to hid my ever brightening cheeks. I composed myself as I brought back the eggs.
“Here they are!”
“Thanks.” He started to eat as I checked on the other customers.
When I came back he was almost done with his eggs and coffee.
“Any more coffee, Jason?” he light up when I said his name
“Actually, I wish but I gotta get going to my job any minute now.” He said with a sad expression
“LI-HA! COULD YOU START BAKING THE PIES????” Mr. Kang’s Busan accent ringed from the kitchen.
“YES AJJUSSI.” I answered “looks like I have to get back to mine” I said rolling my eyes.
“Well it was nice meeting you Lina!” he shot another warm smile.
“Nice meeting you too!” I waved as I walked back to the kitchen.
