Though he had been trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Anton Faistauer soon rejected Academicism in favor of a freer, more expressive style of painting. He was instrumental in founding two modernist groups in Austria: Die Neukunstgruppe (1909) and Der Wassermann (1919). (In between, Faistauer had done mandatory military service during WWI -- but unarmed, as he was deemed "unsuitable" to carry a gun.)
In this still life, the influence of Paul Cézanne on Faistauer can clearly be seen. A seemingly disorderly assemblage of cups, pitchers, and fruit on a tabletop is rendered with loose brushwork against a brown background.
