The Amazon War 17
In the centre of the battlefield, Anticleia watched as all around her and her remaining guards, the Thracians flung down their weapons and shields and begged the wondering Amazons for mercy. Their commander ordered Laomedea to spread her instructions that the surrendering men should be spared and simply bound. Then she ordered her own warriors to take the remnants of Leonidas’ Royal Guard prisoner. Finally, the triumphant warrioress strode towards the defeated and abject figure of the enemy King himself. Leonidas would also be bound, Anticleia thought with grim satisfaction, but the honour of humiliating the invader personally, was hers and hers alone. As the commander pulled the arms of the glowering Leonidas behind his back, Anticleia leaned in, proclaiming loudly: “Woe to the vanquished!” Her Amazons responded with ululating cries of victory, which spread from woman to woman, until they filled the battlefield with their victorious sound.
Meanwhile, on the banks of the Thermidor, Antiope and Electra were involved in a similar task. Pushing the defeated male warriors to their knees, the two Amazons tied them securely, while the men looked alternately resentful and fearful as they were rendered helpless. “What will become of them?” asked Antiope while binding her prisoner. “That will be decided by our commander, Anticleia, the Lady Penelope and by Queen Hippolyte herself.” the captain replied simply. “If I had my way, sister, none of these male beasts would live to see the dawn!”
