Call You Ishmael. My memories of you are so few, mostly mediated by Tito Jorge who was a mentor and fixture for much of my life, but also once as a kid, I woke up to you sitting at the dining table in our old house, waiting for Tito Jorge to print something out (dot matrix printer FTW), and you sat there with taas kilay, de kuwatro and all, and when I sat down too to have brunch, you smiled a tiny bit as you drank Coke. I didn't ask Angela who you were, because I just knew. Just like I knew how terrible it was for Tito Jorge to have lost you, because at your wake in UP, I found him hiding from everyone, up at the highest perch in the projector room, just watching as people paid tribute, critical as always, eschewing the sushalan as expected. Angela labored over the makings of ProBernal AntiBio that Tito Jorge left behind, and now I labor over getting it out there because it is an important memoir to put out, probably the most valuable in recent years, because honest and unexpurgated, because against hagiography and rebellious at every turn, because a historical document of your cultural work and a testament to your intellectual rigor (and Tito Jorge's, too!). Because unafraid, and in that sense relentless, and a reminder of where we're at, and why, and what to do next. I am harnessing all my capacity for showbiz and chika to get your words to as many people as possible.
