Many "gold-standard" zoos and aquariums worldwide let visitors pet, feed, and take selfies with animals, a new report finds.
According to the report from the non-profit group World Animal Protection, 75% of World Association of Zoos and Aquariums 1,241 direct and indirect members featured some variety of animal-visitor interaction. To make wild animals interact with, and perform for, visitors, harsh training methods are frequently used that inflict appalling suffering. Depending on the species, and the type of attraction, these methods can involve premature separation of baby animals from their mothers, starvation, physical restraint, pain and fear.

SeaLife has opened up a beluga sanctuary!! A closed-bay wild water sanctuary in Iceland, where the belugas have plenty of room to swim and dive, and interact with a more natural ocean.

sometimes it just hits me but i love animals so much. like yesterday i got home a bit drunk and i just lay on my bed watching videos of elephants for like 2 hours. and im just looking at lion pictures now. animals are the most amazing thing i wish we (humans) hadnt distanced ourselves so much from them by exploiting and abusing and murdering them so that we could still live among them and be part of that world. now we just create zoos and safaris and buy and sell animals in a vain attempt to get close to nature, not realising that locking animals up/breeding them for our consumption and entertainment is the furthest away from nature we can get. the best thing we can do for animals is just leave them alone at this point. i love animals so much but we donât deserve them or to be close to them because all we seem to do is exploit them. one day people will realise this i hope

Some thoughts on Kasatka...
Iâm grateful they were willing and able to end her suffering rather than let her continue to waste away.
No mention of the horrible skin lesions she was suffering from in addition to (or as a result of) her chronic bacterial respiratory infection...
4-year old Makani is now motherless. At least he has his siblings, Nakai and Kalia. Perhaps they or another female (Corky) will step in to help with him? I donât know all of the specifics of their âpodâ dynamics, so itâs hard for me to say.
In addition to the last point, the San Diego âpodâ is now without a matriarch.
SeaWorld called Kasatka an old orca âby the most current researchâ [x]. No, she was an old orca by captivity standards. We know for a fact that female orcas live an average of 50-60 years in the wild.
No mention of Kasatka being wild-caught (no surprise there though).
Just a quick reminder! If youâre against zoos youâre against the preservation and revival of endangered species, safe havens for injured animals, and education for future conservationists!
If the conditions of a zoo bother you the best option is to try to raise money so they can spend it on improvements!
