I often describe my journey of getting to Norfolk, VA for my PhD as a marathon—long, arduous, tiring, but fulfilling. There have been times when I felt I was moving fast, but times when I had to switch to lower gears. Looking back, it seems that everything fell into place, but I remember days when I had to will it to happen, I had to make difficult choices & had to make sacrifices to reach my goals. Over the past 10 years, I tried to navigate my way to where I am right now. In 2010, I finished my Masters in Australia & came back to Manila to embark on the most exciting decade of my life so far. My journey of “finding Jemo” has led me to experience places I have only dreamt of going to as a child & to making the best friends I could have despite the time zone differences & distance. It was never always easy, but keeping something with me to remind me of who I am & where I’m from (like my Anthill weaves) really kept me grounded & focused. Another cool thing about the Henry…Anthill “honesty shop” where merchandise is laid out with price tags, you choose what you want to buy, add up the amount of your purchases, stick the cash in an envelope, and drop it in the black box. No one’s watching. Just your conscience. Awesome. 😎
