HEALTHY BENEFITS AND RISKS OF RED WINE
As well as moderate red wine drinking may have healthy benefits it can also bring health risks if you abuse of its consumption. As it is known, wine is the result of fermenting dark-colored grapes. Even if there are many types of red wine, alcohol content in all of them usually ranges from 12-15%. For this reason, it is important to know the negative and positive effects that red wine might cause on our body.
Moderate consumption means drinking about 2 units (medium glass) of wine a day. Within its benefits, red wine has antioxidants that increase lipoprotein levels and help protecting arteries against damage, which reduce the risk of heart diseases and cancer. Even if regular consumption of most alcoholic drinks increases the risk of breast cancer, red wine results in a lower risk of developing this kind of cancer. Moreover, wine is better than other alcoholics drinks in raising levels of omega-3 fatty acids which is good for the heart because it helps to regulate cholesterol triglyceride levels.
On the other side, the risks of drinking too much red wine are all the same of any other alcoholic beverage. In first place, people can lose completely control of their drinking and develop alcohol dependence. When more than 30g (about 2-3 glasses of wine) of alcohol are consumed per day, the risk of developing liver disease such as liver cirrhosis is very high. In addition, drinking too much wine might cause also diabetes, cardiomyopathy and hypertension.
In conclusion, drinking red wine may bring health benefits just if it is consumed with moderation. It is important to take good care of health and do not exceed the recommended amount of alcohol. As it was explained, the adequate consumption of red wine prevents some diseases such as breast cancer.
