to start, you'll need basic knowledge of how to gif. i'm not going to be going over the basics, but i'm going to be going right into everything.

1. first off, load your video frames to layers and get the selected frames etc. ready to colour.

2. i like to add curves and levels! so use your eyedroppers to find the brightest point and the darkest. the bottom white dropper is to find the brightest, and the top black dropper find the darkest.

sometimes, curves is really hard to get right, but just experiment with it.

now, my gif looks like this so far.

3. add levels and a black and white layer.

levels is best if you just play with it; sometimes, curves makes others parts look a bit gross, so by using levels you can make some points darker.

if you toggle these, you'll see the first from the left makes it darker whilst the other two make it lighter. try and balance those two out.

now, add your black and white layer and change the blending mode to 'soft light'. this adds some more shadows as well as changing how "grainy" the gif looks.

4. now we start colouring!

the colouring i'm doing in this tutorial is manual colouring. you can try other things if you like, but i won't be including those ones here.

to start, make a blank layer and change your foreground colour to whichever colour you'll be using. for this i'm going to use a purple.

to start colouring, select the brush tool and make your brush size about 50-100. 75 is a good in between.

next, you're going to colour around the subject. it should look like this after:

of course, you can make the brush smaller to get into different spots or use the eraser if you went onto your subject.

5.making it look nice!

next up, we'll change the blending mode so it looks good. the best ones to use are either hue or colour.

your final result will look a little something like this:
