what is a film and a book(or fic) that really stuck with you and since you’ve watched/read they’ve had a lasting impact on your perceptions and writing?
God! Thank you so much for this question <33 I’m such a cinephile especially when it comes to slice of life and no one does them like Japan! I have posted some of them here.
When it comes to inspiration, it definitely has to be Love Letter directed by Shunji Iwai (1st pic), I personally think this is one of the greatest love stories out there <3. I have to mention Monster by Hirokazu Koreeda, the greatest queer story in my opinion <3 (2nd pic) it showcases internalized homophobia, heteronormativity pushed by society and pure childhood love, it’s just so beautiful.
For books, I will never stop talking about Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, everyone has to read this book, it’s a YA queer fiction but one of my favorite books of all times because it changed my perspective on a lot of things, especially when it comes to self loathing, loneliness and family. Almond by Won Pyung Sohn that I always mention, Heaven by Mieko Kawakami, and of course Marina by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Honorable mention to ‘On earth we’re briefly gorgeous’ by Ocean Vuong. I’ve cried so much with them. I’ll try to make a post with my favorite quotes from them <3💕.
