ANNE LILLY / CARRIE SEID At WILLIAM BACZEK FINE ARTS William Baczek Fine Arts, in Northampton, MA is pleased to announce the opening of two new solo exhibitions. Anne Lilly will be showing a collection of stainless steel kinetic sculptures and Carrie Seid will be exhibiting new abstract works constructed from aluminum, mylar, acrylic and silk. The exhibitions will run concurrently, and will be on display from Wednesday, November 12 through Saturday, December 13, 2014. There is an opening reception on Saturday evening, November 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. Anne Lilly is a Boston area kinetic sculptor who creates stainless steel sculptures that display a staggering level of precision. These sculptures are completely fabricated by Anne Lilly, who grinds the heavy, stainless steel columns on industrial metal lathes, meticulously carving teeth on the gears and balancing thin steel rods that tilt and rotate with hypnotic accuracy. The sculptures appear stable and permanent when at rest, but when activated from a gentle push by the viewer they spin, circle and rotate with a perfect, mesmerizing balance. Anne Lilly’s sculptures address chaos and order, the rational versus the emotional, and they contrast what is clinical with what is sensual. Anne Lilly holds a degree in Architecture from Virginia Tech, and has taught fine art at the Art Institute of Boston, the Massachusetts College of Art and the DeCordova Sculpture Garden and Museum. Her works is also currently on view at MIT in the exhibition, Five Thousand Moving Parts. Carrie Seid’s artwork bridges the space between sculpture and painting, two dimensions versus three dimensions. She fabricates her work from aluminum, mylar, acrylic paint and silk. The pieces are constructed using aluminum sheets that are fabricated into an open-faced box. The metal forms an understructure, which supports thin metal strips that are placed on edge inside the box. Modulated color in the form of under-painting, colored mylar or dyed silk is sometimes used to enhance depth, structure and dimension. About her art Carrie Seid says “In my work I attempt to convey the anatomy of human emotions and sensations through form, structure and the glow of saturated color. The tension between geometric and biomorphic forms in my work allows me to explore the tension between order and chaos, constancy and change.” Carrie Seid received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and went on to receive her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She has taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, Arizona State University and Buffalo State University. Currently she lives and works in the Tuscon, Arizona area.
