what is your opinion on the future of 2d animation?
how about an easier question…?
But If you truly want to hear my short, unqualified opinion: I don’t think we will get traditional animated movies from the big companies in the next couple of years. There are one or two feature movies that are scheduled for the future people rumore about being traditional but I doubt it. Often they get quickly after the start turned into a cg project.Â
Though I don’t think traditional animation will ever really die. We still have animation companies around the world which make fantastic movies, especially for adults, that get just ignored my the majority of people AND the academy.Â
I always viewed Studio Ghibli as a the tower of strength that will never stop making traditional movies….well….I was wrong. They want to close the studio now since Miyazaki left.
But still, people never stopped making traitional animation. You just have to look. Even if it’s just a student short.
To be honest, I still have this faint glimmer of hope in me that when the next generation takes over in the big studios, let’s say in the next ten…twenty years we will get at least from time to time again traditional animated movies.
After all, everything comes back after a while. Hand draw animation was done for eighty years until perfection, then a new medium arrived that will be developed until perfection. That’s how it goes. But even silent movies made a comeback in the theatres….so I think 2D animation will come back, to some extend, too.
