Retapamulin (Altabax) is a recently released medication from the Pleuromutilin family of antibiotics. Retapamulin is available as a topical antibiotic cream. It is used to treat a variety of skin infections that are caused by bacteria. Preliminary research indicates that retapamulin is an effective treatment for the common skin disease acne vulgaris. The bacteria that is most commonly associated with acne, Propionibacterium acnes, is especially sensitive to this antibiotic. To learn more about the use of retapamulin as a treatment for acne vulgaris, see: In Depth: Retapamulin (Altabax) and Acne.
