The New Mutants #59 (vol. 1)
I can’t believe that the first issue of the New Mutants portion of Fall of the Mutants is still dicking around with this bird boy saga. The Fall of the Mutants stories in both Uncanny X-Men and X-Factor were top of the line so I hope this shit starts shaping up soon. (New Mutants #59 – Jan 1988)

The New Mutants #60 (vol. 1)
Oh shit!!! I knew that Doug got killed at some point (god damn spoilers) but wasn’t expecting it to happen here by such common means as getting shot with a handgun. This must have been a huge shock to readers at the time, considering there are a lot of plot threads left up in the air concerning the character. Doug had just started to get romantically close with Wolfsbane, had been the focus of many scenes dealing with his depression and insecurity as a result of having a passive power that doesn’t contribute to the team during a super-battle, and just a few issues ago it had been revealed that he had contracted a transmode virus from engaging in alien coitus with Warlock without protection. I wonder how far in advance this death was planned out, or if Louise Simonson took over writing and said, we need something significant to happen to the New Mutants during Fall of the Mutants, so we’re gonna kill the boring one.
