Halsey’s sophomore album is a classic alternative concept album. It opens with ‘The Prologue’, Halsey’s reading of the opening lines of her Romeo and Juliet-esque storyline. Instead of the Montagues and Capulets’ story developing throughout the course of the album, the stories of Luna and Solis, of the respective houses of Aureum and Angelis are told. ‘100 Letters’ sounds like a typical Halsey track, but more energetic, with its percussion filled opening and dancelike feel. Heaven in Hiding is a pop and R&B inflected track, with Halsey’s voice sounding passionate vulnerable, but filled with resolve. ‘Alone’ captures a 90s-like nostalgia, with its drum-machine and horn intro, and features Halsey’s upbeat storytelling through rap-like singing on the almost club-dance track. ‘Lie’, Halsey’s collaboration with Quavo, is an attitude filled track, with Halsey alternating between rapping and singing for the majority of the song until Quavo’s verse, which offers a male perspective to the story.Lie is catchy and almost mysterious, and is sure to be a fan favorite. ‘Don’t Play’ is chime-filled at its beginning, almost like Tender’s song Nadir, and seems like a radio-ready song. What is most groundbreaking is Halsey’s collaboration with Lauren Jauregui on ‘Strangers’, which is energetic LGBTQ+ anthem that is a good listen. Jauregui’s voice is engaging, and both Halsey and Jauregui harmonize well. The album closes with ‘Hopeless’, which features Cashmere Cat, and features piano and string synthesizers, with vocal sampling, which provides a soft, elegant close to the album. The most striking lyric on ‘Hopeless’ is ‘Truth hurts, but secrets kill’, which is a rather thoughtful lyric. Halsey has proven her worth on this album, pouring her whole heart into every song whilst telling a story that is important. hopeless fountain kingdom shows that Halsey can thrive on her own projects outside of her successful collaborations with other artists.
