Monday, September 6: Bruce Dickinson, “No Lies”
“No Lies” closed Tattooed Millionaire with the same slinky guitars and cruising groove as “Bring Your Daughter… to the Slaughter”, linking the end of Bruce Dickinson’s first solo album to the first song he wrote as a solo artist. But while that latter tune was a lark intended as a one-off, “No Lies” was composed with the intent of being on an actual album, which made its underwritten feel less forgivable: the verses were fine enough as a semi-parody of the Sunset Strip, but the music seemed to wander aimlessly and went on much longer than necessary, while the chorus was straight-up lazy. But then again, that chorus was a good holler, and Dickinson sounded like he hadn’t had this much fun since his drunken escapades with Samson- he certainly wasn’t this loose with Iron Maiden, not even live. Janick Gers’ guitar was mostly there for shading, but Andy Carr and Fabio Del Rio were a properly locked-in rhythm section. So “No Lies” was enjoyable despite its clear flaws, and though it was a less than glorious capper to the mostly entertaining Tattooed Millionaire, it was also an appropriate end to a loose and lighthearted romp of a record that seemed to fall off the rails as it went along.
