So this is an honest business review of the VANKYO MatrixPad Z4, which is currently one of the cheapest 10-inch tablets on Amazon in the UK. It comes in a fairly well-presented box and packaging. Straight out of the box you have the tablet, of course, then underneath you have a support card, quick set up guide and a full user guide. You, of course, get the USB charging brick and cable, it is, unfortunately, micro USB and not USB Type C but what can you expect for a tablet within this price range.

From first impressions, you can tell that the tablet has been made from cheaper materials so it has a full plastic back and the screen feels like a very hard plastic to imitate glass but it doesn’t have that rigidity or coldness of glass so I’m fairly sure it’s plastic but this is a durability benefit as it won’t smash or crack like glass does if dropped. It weighs 484 grams in total so it’s fairly lightweight.

The whole device can creak slightly under pressure but overall it feels very stable and isn’t just going to bend in half. As for ports and buttons, on the left side as mentioned it has a micro USB for charge and sync a micro SD card slot for expandable storage, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an up/down volume rocker, a power button and what looks to be a microphone hole. There are no other ports or buttons on the other 3 sides of the tablet.

When held in landscape mode you have a front-facing 2-megapixel camera then on the rear you have a slightly better 8-megapixel camera with a flash. The tablet runs on a 1.5GHZ quad-core ARM processor with 2GBs of RAM and 32GB of onboard flash storage, which can be expanded to 128GB with a micro SD of course. This is all fairly standard within this budget range and is enough to accomplish basic tasks such as web browsing, email checking etc. It is also running the latest Android version which is 9.0 also known as Pie which is impressive.

It has a 1280 x 800 pixel HD display which is bright enough but in my opinion, it could be brighter, especially when using outdoors in sunlight it can seem a little dim. And that screen is powered by a 4500mAh battery which Vankyo says will give you 8 hours of use but I’ve found if you’re watching videos or playing games that can come down to around 4 hours of use time.

It is fairly slow at loading up apps initially and has a small lag to touch inputs but nothing shocking, especially when considering the price range. YouTube is again slow at loading and it can stutter a little now and again but overall it’s a good experience. So if you’re just using this as a casual tablet for browsing or watching the odd video then I don’t think the speed or small lag will be a problem to you but if you plan on using this as a daily device for work or gaming then I can imagine that this slowness will begin to become frustrating.

Moving on to the camera. To be honest, the camera app is very basic, it’s literally just a point and shoot app, no HDR or portrait modes or anything like that. Also, the colours are a little off, they’re coming through a little grey and washed out, I’m not sure whether that is just the screen or the camera its self. But to be honest, you shouldn’t be buying a tablet to use as a photographing device these cameras are merely just a utility to use if needed and aren’t really the focal point of the device.

So in summary, for the price, the VANKYO MatrixPad Z4 is a great piece of technology. I wouldn’t advise purchasing one for heavy usages such as daily work, gaming or video editing but as a casual use device for web browsing and the odd video, it’s perfect. It would also serve well as a tablet for kids to just play simple games and watch YouTube kids and Netflix as it’s mostly made from plastic it shouldn’t smash if dropped and if it is broken then £80 lost isn’t the end of the world and it can easily be replaced with another.

Finally, we get our hands on this device, and we’re going to examine it through and through. This Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7” will unveil many aspects of this Android tablet, and you get to sit at the front row, so be ready! Amazon started to offer tablets with their Kindle series, and this year we got Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX. The HD is a more basic tablet, while the HDX version comes with better specs and features. First, we are going to cover the design and built. We will also cover the screen that (which recent report said that it beats the iPad Air screen). Needless to say, we are also covering the hardware and software review.

Design and build quality

Amazon seems to be serious this year about making a tablet. The first generation of Kindle tablet was kind of plain, but now the HDX series comes with better design and built. Although we aren’t such a fan of that thick bezel at the front, they help you with your grip. The rubbery back is also a much better choice than the common plastic built we’ve seen in many Android tablets. However, the overall design simply does not scream elegance.

Display

This is the part where the Kindle Fire HDX 7” becomes interesting. Although it doesn’t come with the best design, the display is one of the best available on the market. You get an IPS LCD with full HD resolution. I’m sure you’ve read our screen comparison between the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9” VS iPad Air VS Nexus 10. Just like his big brother, this Kindle Fire HDX 7” also packed with great display. It has an excellent brightness and contrast levels, and the colors are accurate. There’s nothing to complain about the Kindle Fire HDX screen.

The hardware part is also great. Specs wise, this tablet comes with a high-end specification that can match the best Samsung’s Android tablet today. You got a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, combined with 2GB of RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. The processor and the GPU is the best there is today, ensuring that the device will offer a smooth experience and HD movies and games will not be a problem either. There are three storage options available, which include 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. However, you should count the basic files that will take up around 6GB-7GB of storage space and the absence of MicroSD card slot. Additional features include a 1.3 megapixel webcam (note: no rear camera), WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and LTE (optional). There’s also the 4550 mAh battery that can get you around 11 hours of battery life.

Software

We’ve never been able to understand Amazon’s move on stripping down the original Android OS into a simplistic Fire OS. The biggest flaw in this tablet is arguably the absence of Google’s apps. The environment offered is not the Google Play Store, but Amazon’s Appstore instead. Don’t get me wrong, the Amazon’s Appstore does support many leading apps in the Play Store, but it is nowhere as vast as the original. Well, I guess you can’t complain much because the original creation of Kindle Fire tablets are to boost Amazon sales.

Android Ceros Motion Tablet Review – Powerful yet Affordable

It’s time for another Android tablet review. This time we get to spend our time with a Chinese Android tablet called Ceros Motion. In the first glance, this affordable tablet has a lot to offer. Or is it? Check out the complete Ceros Motion review below.

The Ceros Motion is the smaller brother of Ceros Revolution, an affordable almost 10-inch Android tablet that comes with amazing display and some other good specs along with amazingly low price. It appears that the Ceros Motion follows this trend, and the company hopes that this Android tablet will be able to compete against the competitors in the 7-inch tablet market.

The build feels very comfortable, and we appreciate that the manufacturer chose not to use shiny plastic at the backside of the tablet. It adds a nice gripping power, and the tablet doesn’t feel slippery at all. We personally think that the button placement could be better, but other than that we have no problem whatsoever with the device’s design.

As we have mentioned earlier, the main highlight of this device is the screen. The manufacturer seems to emphasize on the display to attract customers. The IPS display is something that we rarely see in cheap Android tablets, and the resolution is pretty high too. The screen has a 1280 x 800 resolution, which is better than the original iPad Mini.

Hardware

While the price tag might cause you to think that this tablet is just another Chinese Android tablet, you are dead wrong. We were quite surprised when we got to see the official specs. There’s a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex A7 processor, supported with Power VR SGX544 GPU. The RAM is set at 1GB, while you get 8GB of internal storage space. This tablet also support storage extension with SD Card. Another thing that sets the tablet apart is the dual SIM card slots for both GSM and WCDMA.

Software

The Android 4.2.2 version used in the Ceros Motion can perform pretty well. It may not be as good as the KitKat or Jelly Bean version, but we found almost no problem in terms of software performance. One of the main problems in Chinese Android Tablets are the lack of compatibility, but we see nothing of it. One word of advice, we highly doubt that there will be OS update soon for Ceros Motion. Therefore, if you want to get your hands to the latest versions of Android OS, this might not be a perfect choice.

Battery

If the processor and the screen is great, the same cannot be said about the battery. The 3200 mAh battery is below the standard of the current Android devices. That said, it is not the smallest, as we’ve seen many other budget Android tablets have smaller batteries. For example, the Acer Iconia B1 has a 2640 mAh battery. With this battery, you can get around 4 to 5 hours of video streaming.

Connectivity

We know that the tablet support dual SIM card, but as we’ve always said times and times again, we don’t think that a tablet should have a calling capability. It’s just too big. Perhaps the most thinkable way to use the SIM is to get 3G connection and to send text messages via SMS. Remember, the Ceros tablet only supports WCDMA 2100 MHz and 850 MHz, so be sure to check your carrier’s network.

There are other standad connectivity such as WiFi etc, and we are pleased to tell you that the WiFi worked just fine during our Ceros Motion review. We’ve seen several other Chinese tablets with problematic WiFi reception.

Performance

The Mediatek quad core processor is a popular processor for cheaper tablets. It is not as strong as the Snapdragon quad core processors, but it is still pretty good. During the CPU benchmark, the Ceros Motion is generally faster than Samsung Galaxy S2, but it is a bit slower than HTC One X. Normal usage feels ok and there were no lags. The tablet’s GPU can still manage the high performance usage, but in ultra high quality, the GPU started to show some delay. We can’t expect much from the 5 megapixel camera and VGA front facing camera. Let’s just say that this tablet doesn’t suit people who love photography.

But Helft has some great points, and highlights how an affordable Chrome book can be very convenient and productive. It is a $250 laptop, after all. Netbooks have reached that price before, but this happens to be a quality Chrome tablet/ book, while Windows netbooks at the same price point are the lowest of the lowest. Like I said previously Google have been in talks to develop an official chrome tablet or a chrome tablet/book that has touchscreen facilities.
