ANDREW LORD BECOMES HEAD COACH OF QMJHL HALIFAX
Reigning ECHL Coach of the Year went 155-94-39 in 288 games over four seasons in the Upstate By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Greenville Swamp Rabbits, proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, announced today that Head Coach and General Manager Andrew Lord has accepted the role of Head Coach with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). “I cannot overstate what Lordo has meant to the Greenville Swamp Rabbits organization over the last four seasons. From his first season, Lordo had a standard not just for on-ice excellence, but in promoting synergy between hockey operations and the front office and commitment to striving for the best in all we do as an organization,” stated Tim Vieira, President of the Swamp Rabbits. “His passion for hockey and the people in it, his drive to be elite, and his leadership made our organization better in every facet both on and off the ice. He’s truly helped us build a great foundation since his arrival in 2020and helped us turn this team into a first-class destination in the ECHL for players and staff alike. I look forward to watching his career continue to develop and wish him and his family all the best.” Lord completed his fourth season with the Swamp Rabbits in the 2023-24 campaign, posting a 44-23-4-1 record in the 72-game schedule, the second time in franchise history the organization registered back-to-back 40-win seasons. His team’s 44 wins and 93 standings points, both personal bests with the Swamp Rabbits, propelled Greenville to the 2024 South Division Championship en route to his fourth consecutive berth into the Kelly Cup Playoffs under his guidance. Additionally, Lord was selected as one of two coaches to lead the ECHL All-Stars at the 2024 ECHL All-Star Classic, earning the honor by attaining the highest points percentage in the Eastern Conference prior to the Christmas break. He also set a team franchise record by leading the Swamp Rabbits to 30 regular season wins faster than anyone in all of Greenville professional hockey history, accomplishing the task in just 42 games. Finally, Lord was bestowed with the John Brophy Award at the conclusion of the season, which annually recognizes the ECHL Coach of the Year. He is the first in both franchise and Greenville professional hockey history to receive the league’s highest coaching honor. “This was an incredibly hard decision. I am so thankful for my time here in Greenville. The last four years have truly been special, and I am very proud of the strides we have made as an organization on and off the ice,” said Lord on his departure for Halifax. “To Jeff Dickerson, TJ Puchyr, Emma Setzer, Bill Anthony, and everyone at Spire Sports + Entertainment, thank you for providing us with the resources, in addition to everything you do for us to ensure we can compete at the highest level possible. “To Todd Mackin, I will always be indebted to you for taking a chance on me and providing me this opportunity. To Tim Vieira and our staff in the front office, thank you for your constant support and for providing us with a true home-ice advantage each season. To our entire hockey operations staff, I truly appreciate all the hours and commitment you have brought to our team. To the players, I can’t thank you enough for dedicating yourselves to our organization and building our culture through your buy-in game after game. You truly represented our community with great pride. To Matt Caldwell at Bon Secours, our arena, and all our sponsors, thank you for your partnership and dedication to our organization. Finally, to the fans, thank you for your unwavering passion, loyalty, and belief in our team. “My family and I have loved our time in Greenville, and we take with us so many great memories. From the bottom of my heart, thanks for everything!” Lord compiled a 155-94-39 record over his four seasons with the Swamp Rabbits organization in 288 games, a 0.606 points percentage. He qualified for the Kelly Cup Playoffs in each season, reaching as far as the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals. “From the moment I first talked to Coach Lord, I knew we found a true leader, competitor, and winner, in addition to an outstanding human being. I couldn’t be more thankful for him and all he’s done for our organization over the last four years,” said Todd Mackin, President of Spire Holdings. “From the start, Lordo brought a culture of winning and accountability, and through this, provided us with stability. Through success on the ice and a dedication to the Greenville community off it, he helped our organization grow into the premier entity that it is in both the ECHL and hockey today. He challenged all of us to be better versions of ourselves both in the front office and in the dressing room, and leaves Greenville in a better place than he found it in 2020. I wish him and his family all the best in their new venture. Thank you for everything, Coach.” “Since we bought the Swamp Rabbits four years ago, we’ve had the pleasure of watching many players wear our jersey and welcomed different staff members into our organization. However, we’ve only had one head coach, and that’s what strikes me in this moment,” said Jeff Dickerson, CEO and Co-Owner of Spire Sports + Entertainment and Owner of the Swamp Rabbits. “Lordo brought so much to our organization. He brought ideas to our staff and built a culture that will be hard to replicate. To me personally, though, he brought a peace that everything was being done the right way in the room and on the ice. We will miss him in so many ways and are so grateful for what he brought to our organization. Halifax is getting a great coach and developer of talent, a great man, and someone who has the ability to coach at the highest level of our game. Thank you, Lordo, for all you’ve done for our team.” A native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Lord began his tenure with the Swamp Rabbits following his time with the Cardiff Devils of the Elite Ice Hockey League. Over six seasons as their Head Coach, he led the Devils to nine separate titles, including three Conference championships, two Challenge Cup championships, two League titles, and two Playoff championships. As the winningest coach in Devils history, he led the team to an overall 221-75-22 record. Prior to entering the coaching ranks, Lord enjoyed a lengthy professional hockey career out of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the NCAA. He spent 10 seasons as a professional player, totaling 462 games across the ECHL, AHL, EIHL, and Germany’s Second Bundesliga. His best work as a pro was done in the EIHL, where he scored 173 points in 216 games, all with Cardiff. The search for a new Head Coach will begin immediately. ANDREW LORD NAMED ECHL COACH OF THE YEAR
Fourth-year bench boss becomes first in both franchise and Greenville hockey history to receive recognition By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, SC—The ECHL announced today that Andrew Lord, Head Coach/General Manager of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, a proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, received the John Brophy Award as the ECHL's Coach of the Year. Lord, who finished as runner-up for the award in his first season in 2021, becomes the first coach in both franchise and Greenville professional hockey history to receive the league's honor. The John Brophy Award is presented annually to the ECHL coach who has contributed the most to his team's success. The coach is chosen by ECHL coaches, broadcasters, media relations directors, and media members. The trophy is named for John Brophy, who won a record three ECHL titles with Hampton Roads in 1991, 1992, and 1998 and was inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2009. This season, Lord guided the Swamp Rabbits to a 44-23-4-1 record and 93 points in the standings, claiming the organization's first South Division Championship in over a decade with a second straight 40-win campaign. Additionally, the Swamp Rabbits earned their 30th win of the season in just 42 games, the fastest pace ever in Greenville professional hockey history. They won eight straight road games from November 14th to December 9th, a new franchise record. By holding the highest win percentage in the Eastern Conference before the Christmas break, Lord was named one of two coaches of the ECHL All-Star Team for the 2024 ECHL All-Star Classic in January. "I'm extremely honored to receive this award from the ECHL. It's truly humbling," said Lord. "A recognition like this is a true testament to the organization that we have here in Greenville. From Assistant Coach Kyle Mountain, Video Coach River Pease, our support staff in Alec Muise and AJ Smith, our players, front office, and ownership, this is a collective effort and a true reflection of our culture and determination to be better both on the ice and in the community. I'm grateful to Jeff Dickerson, our owner, Todd Mackin, Tim Vieira, our President, and everyone who made this season possible. It's a true honor, and I'm thankful for the ECHL's recognition." Over four years in the Upstate, Lord has compiled a 155-94-30-9 record in 288 games, a 0.606 win percentage. He's led the Swamp Rabbits to the Kelly Cup Playoffs each season, reaching as far as the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals in his first campaign. "I couldn't be prouder of Andrew in receiving this honor from the ECHL. It is very much well deserved," said Todd Mackin, President of Spire Holdings. "It was apparent during our hiring process four years ago that Andrew had what it takes to transform our team into one of the most competitive in the entire ECHL. He tirelessly works with his staff to build a team that's worthy of representing our community and competing amongst the best in the league. Back-to-back 40-win seasons, postseason qualification each year, and over a dozen players promoted to the American Hockey League only scratches the surface of where his career trajectory will take him. We are grateful for everything he's done for our team, both on and off the ice. I look forward to watching him continue this excellence as he pursues our first Kelly Cup Championship as an organization." Before joining Greenville before the 2020-21 season, Lord led the Cardiff Devils of the Elite Ice Hockey League to nine separate titles, including three Conference championships, two Challenge Cup championships, two League titles, and two Playoff championships. As the winningest coach in Devils history, he led the team to a 221-75-22 record across his six seasons as head coach. Before entering the coaching ranks, Lord enjoyed a lengthy professional hockey career out of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He spent ten seasons in the pro ranks, totaling 462 games. His best work as a pro was done in the EIHL, where he scored 173 points in 216 games, all with Cardiff. "Coach Lord epitomizes what it takes to be the best at his craft. The accountability and urgency he brings to our team make us better as an organization, not only on the ice, but off the ice and in the community," said Tim Vieira, Swamp Rabbits President. "Working with him is an immense privilege. His leadership of our men on the ice and our support staff has been evident from the very first day we worked together – and this recognition is a culmination of that dedication since day one. From coaching the ECHL All-Stars, to setting team records, and elevating everyone around him, there is no one more deserving of this honor." The Swamp Rabbits, 2024 South Division Champions, now look forward to the beginning of the 2024 Kelly Cup Playoffs, taking on the Orlando Solar Bears in the South Division Semifinals. Game 1 of the best-of-seven series is Sunday, April 21st, slated for a 3:05 p.m. EST puck drop at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Friday's win saw two players, Alex Ierullo and Ethan Somoza, produce multi-point games with two points each. The three-goal victory equaled the Swamp Rabbits' most significant win against the Icemen during the regular season and was their fifth win in Jacksonville. Game 1 ended with tempers flaring, setting the stage for an energetic Game 2 on Sunday, as the Rabbits look to take control of the series and the Icemen look to level it. SCOUTING THE ICEMEN: Defense. That's been the key to Jacksonville's success over the last couple of seasons, and it is very much the case again as the Kelly Cup Playoffs get underway. Goals have come at a scarcity for opposing offenses, as the 4th-ranked defense in the ECHL allows just 2.88 goals per game. The Icemen have run a trio of goaltenders all season, including Charles Williams, Olof Lindbom, and Parker Gahagen. As it stands, Gahagen remains in the AHL with the Hartford Wolfpack but is eligible to join the Icemen for the postseason. Williams and Lindbom can keep up with a red-hot Rabbits offense and be the deciding factor in games. Brendan Harris has done what few others have done against the Rabbits, score a hat-trick in the regular season. His six goals led the Icemen against Greenville over the 11-game series. SHARING THE SCORING: Game 1 saw four Swamp Rabbits find the back of the net in the 4-1 victory. Ben Freeman scored a power-play goal to open the scoring before Josh McKechney, Joe Gatenby, and Alex Ierullo added to the totals. Ierullo's goal was the only one by a player who scored at least 20 goals during the regular season, which provided Head Coach Andrew Lord with much-needed secondary scoring in the series-opening game. BEMIDJI BOYS LEAD THE WAY: Two rookies were the top scorers for the Swamp Rabbits in the Game 1 win, as for Bemidji State Beavers, Alex Ierullo and Ethan Somoza combined for four points in the opener. The two wingers combined for 126 points for the Rabbits' offense during the regular season. Both surpassed the 20-goal mark. Ierullo and Somoza connected for the game's final goal, Ierullo's first of the postseason. GATOR GET GOING: While technically a rookie by ECHL standards, Joe Gatenby is no stranger to the Kelly Cup Playoffs. The Kelowna, BC native appeared in his third postseason tournament, having debuted for the Rabbits in the opening round last season and making four appearances in 2018 with the Atlanta Gladiators. Gatenby's third-period goal ensured that the blue-liner had recorded a goal in all three Kelly Cup Playoffs, recorded a goal and an assist in his two previous stints. WELCOME TO THE POSTSEASON: Friday's Game 1 was the first Kelly Cup Playoffs appearance for eight different Swamp Rabbits. On Greenville's second goal of the game, three first-time playoff performers combined for the tally, as Colton Young and Brett Kemp assisted Josh McKechney's first of the postseason. GAME 1. GO TIME: All eyes turn to one of the most intriguing matchups of the First Round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs as the Rabbits and the Icemen open their series on Friday night. After an 11-game regular season series saw the Rabbits claim victory in five games and points in an additional two, Greenville and Jacksonville drop the puck on a new best-of-seven series. The two sides waited until the final weekend of the regular season to sort out the final positionings, with the Icemen earning an overtime point against South Carolina in its penultimate game to put itself in second and the Rabbits in third. A pair of opening games at the Veterans Memorial Arena will set the stage for a two- and potentially three-game set at Bon Secours Wellness Arena when the series shifts to Greenville for Game 3. As it stands, Gahagen remains in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack but is eligible to join the Icemen for the postseason. Williams and Lindbom are more than capable of keeping up with a red-hot Rabbits offense and can be the deciding factors in games. Brendan Harris has done what few others have done against the Rabbits, score a hat-trick in the regular season. His six goals led the Icemen against Greenville over the 11-game series. Tuesday night, the Icemen saw the return of power forward Travis Howe. The former Swamp Rabbit has made a name for himself with his grit and tenacity when dropping the gloves. RABBITS ROLLING: The final weekend of the regular season, it has pitted the Rabbit against the Icemen in the race for second place in the South. While Jacksonville edged in front by game 72, Greenville's offense did its part in trying to capture home-ice advantage, thrashing both the Savannah Ghost Pirates and the South Carolina Stingray 7-1 in back-to-back games. The Rabbits' 14 goals in two games were just the icing on the cake that was a massive o-zone onslaught over the final four games. Greenville outscored its last three opponents 26-7 over four wins to round out the regular season. The stretch helped cap off the most offensive season under Head Coach Andrew Lord, as Greenville tallied 244 goals, its highest mark since the 2016-17 season. HISTORY FAVORS THE RABBITS: Greenville earned points in seven of the 11 meetings with the Icemen and went 4-1 at the Veterans Memorial Arena during the regular season. Greenville has a chance to capitalize on their strong play in the Sunshine State and, potentially, bring a lead or a split series back to The Well. The catch? The Rabbits are 1-3-2 against Jacksonville on home ice. MOVEMENT IN THE BACK: While Luke Richardson has turned heads with his 2-0 start since joining the Swamp Rabbits earlier this month, most of the attention has been on David Hrenak and Ryan Bednard. Hrenak, on Monday, became the third Rabbits goaltender in two seasons to be recalled to the NHL, landing on LA's playoff roster. While the team leader is starts and wins departed, the Rabbits welcomed Ryan Bednard back from his PTO with Grand Rapids in the AHL. Bednard has been nothing short of influential for the Rabbits, going 11-8-1 with a 2.81 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. According to Andrew Lord in his postseason press conference and an appearance on The Rob Brown Show on The Fan Upstate, Bednard is expected to be the starter for the postseason run.
