Andalusite an aluminum silicate and a polymorph of Silimanite and Kyanite. It got its name from the Spanish province Andalusia, named by Jean-Claude Delamétherie in 1798. As Delamétherie was not familiar with Spanish geography, the mineral was not found in Andalusia, but rather in El Cardoso (Guadalajara). Further confusion came later from some authors, who considered that the origin was from the province of Almeria. To this day, some modern mineralogy books still make this error. Andalusite experiences a play of color called pleochroism, being extremely apparent in faceted gems. The color ranges from red, yellow, and green depending on the angle it’s facing. Andalusite has some varieties like Chiastolite, a crystal cross shaped inclusions from carbon, and a manganese-bearing, green Andalusite called Viridine. Andalusite was primarily a collector’s stone, but has recently caught the eye of some jewelry designers.
Since it is a lesser known gem, there’s not much lore on it. However, Andaulsite was used as amulets by older cultures believing it had mystical properties. It is sometimes referred to as the “Seeing Stone”, as it was to see one’s character without bias. It encourages the wearer to appraise issues rationally and see problems from all perspectives, without fear or judgment. The stone is also said to make a wearer realize self-sacrificing are not reuired, but are acceptable when needed. Andaulsite is also said to help enhancing and recalling memory, being chivalrous, and help bring things into balance and moderation.
