Vulnerability and Authenticity
I was watchingĀ this video about Harryās voice and I donāt know how much the man knows about Harry outside of his music, but he had some really insightful things to say at the end of the video (emphasis mine).Ā
āI really like Harry Styles. I think Harry is one of the best pop/rock performers that we have right now. And heās still so young. So, itās like, I wonder what, like, heāll start doing as his career continues. Because heās already had a few, sort of, stages of his career, and he navigated all of them really, really well in a way that heās like reinventing himself as he ages.
But is it reinvention when he just seems to be growing as a person? Because Iām a totally different person than I was when I was 18. Heās probably a totally different person than he was when he was with One Direction. And it seems less a reinvention that is this intentional image heās trying to portray, and more him being cool with himself and letting everyone see it. I think thatās awesome. It shows that youāre really comfortable with yourself to be able to change and let your art change as you change without being too judgmental of yourself and being too scared of what other people will think of you as you change.
People will react well if you show your most authentic self. I think thatās a really hard thing to get by because it feels so vulnerable, but, itās like, if they donāt, then who cares? Theyāre not your friends. Theyāre not your fans. You will find the people who will gravitate towards you the more you just, like, let yourself out. And I think itās a really freeing thing as an artist [...] to just be likeĀ āwho cares? maybe this wonāt be a top ten record. But like, Iām doing this for myself and for other reasonsā.
And the people who have long careers that are really successful, theyāre focused on trying to express themselves andĀ āIām doing this because I love itā and not on trying to make other people like them. Thatās why I like Harry so much. Because heās just being Harry. I think thatās rare.ā
