Imbolc (which became adopted to the church as Candlemas) is he ancient gardening festival of Bridgit the goddess of fertility. It sits on the 1st/2nd of Feb between the winter solstice and Spring Equinox. In the church it marks the end of the 40 days rest period of the Virgin Mary after the birth of christ. In tradition it marks the turning point from the bleakness of winter into the new spring- becoming ground hog day in America, and historically being the point at which you’d remove your Christmas and winter decorations.
