We have hit the 2023 backlog. And what better way to start it than with a small collection of one of my favorite OCs i have, Anauk!
He's a pretty standard vulcan with oooone little deviancy... He is kind of shit at the whole stoicism thing. He's not AS BAD as a vulcan with zero training, but he just can't quite ignore his emotions. In his home planet that caused so many grievances, but in the Federation, he feels normal and safe.
you know im gonna ask about my bf Anauk. also obligated to ask about Ahnvahr tho.
ah, Anauk, my sweet child
...okay i lied heâs not sweet at all.Â
just about as likely to slap you as kiss you tbh. but i mean if youâre into that ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
not necessarily a dom but he absolutely refuses to submit to anyone so practically itâs about the same
not hugely interested in sex actually? like heâs not going to seek it out, but if somebody offered and he didnât think they were completely terrible he might go along with it
all of this really hinges on him being in a comparatively good mood
offer to do stuff for him. like offer him a blowjob, and if he likes it, heâs got enough of a sense of fairness that heâll return the favor. just donât tell him what to do, that will only lead to disaster
like donât even ask him to do something. heâs a contrary asshole and heâll say no just to say no, even if he was going to do it anyway
heâs awful is what iâm saying here
good fuckin luckÂ
and Ahnvahr! actual sweet child tho
not very experienced but 110% ready to try new things
enthusiasm is the key word here
chatty as hell, he will not shut up unless thereâs something in his mouth
also... Loud. you will know if he likes something. as will everyone in a mile radius
heâs gonna laugh a lot during sex probably, so not a good partner if youâre insecure. sex is funny okay, thereâs a lot of weird sounds and awkwardness and heâs got no filter
not squeamish at all, probably really into comeplay/bloodplay actually (his or his partnerâs, again, not picky)
somehow manages to blame both himself and everybody else for everything that goes wrong in his life, and that would likely carry over to relationships
good luck trying to cuddle with him, he does not really like to be touched
an overprotective guardian would constantly be hovering around, true alone time may be difficult to come by
said overprotective guardian would probably blame you if you made Anauk sad. itâs really easy to make Anauk sad. this would not go well for you friend
Karatek blinked numbly down at his hands, folded neatly in his lap. They were still grubby from his travels, and he rubbed them restlessly on the hem of his tunic, only succeeding in smudging the dirt over the fabric as well.
Someone must have led him from the infirmary, because he was outside now, that same hot sun beating down like it had for so much of his journey here. Except now, he didnât feel that urgent and exciting pull - just a weird hollowness, and the hopeless need to somehow fill it.
A hand dropped onto his shoulder and he startled, blinking up through the harsh sunlight at Teknat.
âHow are you?â he asked gently, easing himself to sit on the stoop next to Karatek.
âIâm -â Karatek started, then shrugged. âI donât know. Is he - what happened to him?â he asked helplessly.
Teknat sighed. âAnauk is⌠not well.â
âSo heâs sick?â Karatek asked. âCan something be done? A cure, or a treatmentâŚâ
Teknat shook his head. âHeâs healthy enough in body, though heâs certainly not eating or drinking as much as he should be. Iâm afraid itâs more difficult than that.â He frowned. âFrom the beginning, I think, is the only wayâŚâ
Teknat still looked uncertain, and Karatek nodded, leaning forward. âTell me.â
The healer nodded slowly. âAll right. Okay. Anauk⌠when he came here, he wasnât a pearlcatcher. He was a guardian, like you.â
âWhat?â Karatek said, and Teknat quickly raised a hand to forestall him.
âPlease, let me finish. He was drawn here, like you were - he got through the sandstorms somehow, weâre still not sure how. Except his charge wasnât one of us, it was our oasis. You have to understand,â Teknat said pleadingly, âthatâs our only fresh water for miles. Our only place to fish, for an entire clan. We need it to survive here.â
âSo?â Karatek said desperately. âIt shouldâve been perfect! Anauk would protect it for you, right?â
âYes, well,â Teknat said, smiling humorlessly, âHeâd - been alone, we think, for some time. Maybe his entire life. He was all instinct, you see, and he thought he had to protect the oasis from us.â
âWhat?â Karatek breathed. âWhat - what do you mean?â
âHe attacked our fisher, when he came out one morning with his nets,â Teknat said, voice gone startlingly cold. âIt was so early - hardly anyone was about, and he was half-dead by the time the guard could get Anauk off of him. And he just wouldnât stop - struggling, fighting, if someone held him down heâd hurt them and if we tied him or caged him heâd hurt himself trying to get free. We didnât know what else to do,â he said shakily.
âSo you took his charge from him,â Karatek said, horrified. âYou made him a pearlcatcher and - and now heâs like this.â He pressed a hand over his mouth as Teknat nodded, not meeting his eyes.
âHey,â Karatek said quietly, easing the infirmary door closed behind him. Teknat had assured him he was welcome in his and Inaraâs home so long as Anauk was here - the least he could do, Karatek thought. âAnauk? Are you awake?â
The Anauk-shaped lump on the far bed rose, then fell, accompanied by a gusty sigh but no words.
âDo you mind if I come in?â
That same carrying sigh, and then his rusty voice. âCould I stop you?â
Karatek faltered. âWell - yes? I can go, if thatâs what you want?â
Anauk shifted enough for one baleful green eye to peek over his shoulder. âWhat I want,â he repeated flatly.
âYeah?â Karatek ventured, when he didnât continue. âI want what you want. What would make you happy,â he said, quirking a half-smile, though it felt more like a painful grimace under that cold stare.
âThen you should know that what I want is to be left alone,â Anauk said. Karatek nodded, biting his lip as he turned back to the door. He didnât know what heâd do if his Charge didnât want him near, but surely he could stay close by, check in occasionally - Anauk cleared his throat, and he halted.
âYou think I can be alone here?â Anauk said, extricating a hand from the blankets to gesture around the infirmary. âTeknat and Inara both coming in and out at all hours, hovering, with all their guilt and shame -â he scowled. âI hate it.â
âThey wonât let you leave?â Karatek asked, eyes wide.
Anauk snorted. âApparently there are concerns that I canât take care of myself. Wonât take care of myself,â he corrected himself, with a harsh laugh that turned into a rattling cough.
Karatek took a few hesitant steps closer. ââŚwouldnât you?â
âWho knows,â Anauk said. âNow either get me out of here or get out.â He rolled back over, effectively ending the conversation.
âNot what I had in mind,â Anauk growled, and Karatek flinched, rubbing the back of his neck.
âYou didnât really specifyâŚâ he started, only to be silenced by Anaukâs glare.
âI specified alone,â he said shortly. âI thought even you would be able to understand an instruction that simple.â Even leaning heavily on a borrowed cane, squinting up at Karatek against the sunlight outside that he likely hadnât seen in weeks, he was formidable.
âInara and Teknat thought itâd be good for you,â Karatek said weakly.
âAnd we know how highly I value the opinions of anyone in this clan,â Anauk said, voice drier than the desert around them.
âThis is the only way theyâd let you go!â Karatek said. âYouâre not taking care of yourself! Someone has to!â
âI didnât ask you to!â Anauk snarled.
âAnd I didnât ask for this either!â Karatek said. This, of all things, left Anauk speechless. Karatek quickly took advantage of his silence. âLook, I wasnât lying to you. Iâll leave you alone as much as you need, but Iâve also promised to make sure you eat and maybe see the sun once in a while, okay?â
Karatekâs chest heaved with the force of his outburst, but he deflated quickly when Anauk stayed quiet. âAnauk?â
âFine,â he said, hands clenched on the cane and eyes downcast. âFine. Where are⌠we⌠living?â
@dragonknightmidnight i believe you asked for a ping?Â

Shielding his face against the hot desert wind, Karatek pressed onward, following the urgent pounding in his blood - well, it had been urgent when it began weeks ago, but now it has dulled into a strange normalcy. A threat, imminent yet enduring, a call for protection only he could provide - thatâs your charge, his mother had told him, and sent him to follow the call with her blessing.
He felt close now, so close, but this storm - he pressed into it, airborne sand burning his exposed skin, but it was as if he shoved his face into a solid wall. Feet slipping in sand, eyes held shut against the storm, he couldnât tell if he made any progress at all.
Nonetheless, he pushed forward, nothing but the howling wind in his ears.
And the discordant sound of a low laugh.
âWhoâs there?â he called, then coughed on his mouthful of sand.
âYouâre awful persistent, arenât you,â the voice came again, soft and lazy. âI shouldnât, really, but⌠oh well. I can put it back in a minute.â
With all the suddenness of a lightning strike, the storm died. Karatek flailed as the resistance heâd been working against disappeared, and he fell to his knees in the settling sand.
âWoah now, careful there,â someone said, and Karatek blinked grit from his eyes to see a hand extended towards him. He took it, clambering to his feet.
âWho are you?â he asked. His rescuer had hair and skin the same dusty gold of the desert around them, though whether that was their natural color or simply a result of the clinging sand he couldnât tell.
âJust a humble Wind mage,â he said, crooking a smile as he leaned on a gnarled wooden staff.
Karatek squinted. âSo you - that stormâŚâ
The mage gave an indolent salute. âI like my privacy, yâknow how it is.â
âWeâre in the middle of a desert,â Karatek protested. He just smiled and shrugged.
âThat we are, that we are. So whatâre you doing out this way?â
Karatek straightened up, eyes bright. âIâm searching for my charge! I know itâs near, I can feel it - Iâm so close. Could you keep the storm away while I pass through?â
The mage readjusted his stance, eyes flicking to the side. âYour charge, huh. And about how accurate is that little homing beacon of yours?â
Karatek shrugged helplessly. âI donât know, itâs kind of my first charge,â he joked.
He didnât laugh. âGimme a wild guesstimate.â
âWell⌠that way,â Karatek said, gesturing in front of him. The mage sighed, and let his head fall down to thunk loudly against the top of his staff. Karatek looked on in concern but didnât know what else to say.
âOkay,â the mage said, a little muffled from behind the fall of his hair. âIâm gonna ask you to do something, and Iâm gonna need you not to ask questions, okay? This isnât really in my purview, is the thing, but I do wanna help if I can.â
âYes, anything,â Karatek said eagerly.
âGood,â the mage said. âI need you to stay right here. Donât move, just sit your butt down and wait for me to come back.â
âYouâll be back soon, though, right?â Karatek asked nervously. The sun here was blazing, and he hadnât much water left at all.
The mage looked up at him, then the sky, then back at him. âSoon enough. I mean, if Iâm not back by nightfall, Iâd continue on your way. Who knows, you might be headed pastâŚâ he mumbled, then turned away. The storm whipped back into existence right behind him, and Karatek stumbled back in surprise.
âHey, wait -â he called, then subsided as he realized the mage was probably beyond hearing already. With nothing else to do, he lowered himself to the hot sand, tugged his shirt over his head to shield it from the sun, and waited.
Despite his worrying mention of nightfall, the mage returned before too long, the storm parting before him with two others in tow. Karatek blinked to see the newcomers, both of them in golden armor that gleamed harshly in the sun.
âAlieth tells us youâre searching for your charge,â the woman said, and Karatek nervously noted her hand resting casually on the hilt of her sword. She certainly looked like she knew how to use it, with muscular arms tanned by the sun and laced with the odd scar.
âYes maâam,â he said, struggling to his feet as they slipped through the sand. âI donât want any trouble.â
âIâm sure you donât,â she said, firm but gentle. âAnd we hardly do either. Our clan lives in the direction you travel, and we need our sanctuary to remain intact. Do you understand?â
Karatek hesitated, but ventured, âHonestly, no⌠will you let me pass, orâŚ?â
She sighed. âIâm sorry, I was unclear. Weâll lead you around our clan, and if youâre pulled towards our settlement regardless - well, we do welcome any who wish to live here, if youâd be willing to live according to our laws.â
âI need to be with my charge,â Karatek said firmly. âIf itâs in your clan then I need to be too.â
âAll right, then,â she said. âMy name is TâBren, this is Vaikarik, and you already know Alieth - though he probably wonât be joining us.â
âAbsolutely not,â Alieth said brightly. âIâve already walked more today than I do in a week, usually. Good luck, and all that,â he said, and Karatek laughed and nodded as they left him behind.
His two new shining companions spoke little, guiding him onto paths that were marked only by occasional footprints. Â Aliethâs storms were nowhere to be found, only the faint whistling of the winds in the distance.
It felt like it had been hours under the hot sun when he came to a halt, TâBren and Vaikarik quickly looking to him. âIt feels -â he started awkwardly, then huffed. âWeâve gone too far. I need to go that way,â he pleaded, pointing in the one direction theyâd unerringly steered him away from.
TâBren sighed again but seemed unsurprised, nodding and turning in the direction heâd indicated. âTo the clan it is, then.â Vaikarik looked ready to protest, but she shut him down with a glance.
Karatek hardly cared. Finally he felt as if his charge was within reach, and it brought back all the urgency heâd felt in the first days of his Search.
Soon, pale stone walls appeared in the distance, and Karatek wondered how he hadnât seen any indication of them before now.
âWelcome to ShiâKahr,â TâBren said, and Karatek nodded, barely listening. So close.
If pressed, he doubted he could recall much of anything about his first journey through the city. Through an arched gate, left wide open, down a wide street, buildings in various states of gleaming decadence and disrepair⌠the only thing that stood out was the few wary faces that watched his progress. Because he was flanked by two guards? Or maybe any outsider was a novelty here.
He sped up as he approached one building, brightly colored curtains hanging in its open windows and a bold red cross painted on the door.
âSeriously?â Vaikarik whispered, and TâBren quickly shushed him.
âWhat dâyou mean?â Karatek asked distractedly. He kept walking until a firm hand landed on his chest, holding him back.
âAh-ah,â TâBren said. âItâs rude to just walk into someoneâs home, you know.â
She nodded, and clapped his shoulder. âWait here. Iâll talk to Teknat and Inara.â She walked to the door and rapped her knuckles against it, the door opening promptly to reveal a tall, bespectacled man, the doorframe barely high enough to accommodate his antlers.
âTâBren?â he asked. âIs something wrong?â
âNo, donât worry,â TâBren said, then explained Karatekâs situation.
Teknat seemed oddly cautious. âAnd heâs sure⌠here?â His eyes flicked to Karatek, and the guardian straightened quickly.
âKaratek,â TâBren called, motioning him forward. He hastened to the door, Vaikarik on his heels.
âPlease,â he said, staring unblinking into Teknatâs wary gold eyes. He didnât know how else to communicate the urge, the need he felt to come inside.
The imperial slumped, opening the door wide and stepping back to let them in. Karatek bounded forward, looking around the house. There was a long, high table across the room, shelves filled with neatly labeled bottles and jars and rolls of bandages.
âYouâre⌠a healer?â Karatek asked, and Teknat nodded, closing the door gently behind the guards.
âMy wife and I,â he said. âOur quarters are there,â he nodded to a door on the right, âand the infirmary, there.â
It was the latter that Karatek was drawn to, and he walked slowly towards the door, easing it open as his breath caught in his throat.
A window was open, casting bright light over a row of neat beds. Only one, at the very end, was occupied, blankets pulled up over the person laid there. Karatek paced slowly towards them, only peripherally aware of the three following close behind him.
He extended one hand slowly, hesitating over the lumpâs shoulder. Reddish hair in a dark tangle on the pillow and a single pointed ear were all he could see of them. He glanced back at Teknat, who looked worried but nodded. Karatek laid his hand on their shoulder.
His blood sang, a shimmering note of completion warring with the sense that something was wrong, his charge was here but he was in danger, but that couldnât be right, could it?
âWhat do you want?â the lump rasped, voice raw with thirst or disuse. They didnât move at all.
Karatek blinked. âIâm - I mean - you. Youâre my Charge. Iâm here to protect you.â
They laughed hollowly, rolling over and dislodging Karatekâs hand from his shoulder. Soft green eyes to match Karatekâs met his, but they only sent a frisson of unease down his spine as a terribly bleak smirk curled his cracked lips. âItâs a little late for that, donât you think?â
