A very interesting (to me) idea I had: What if Dream is literally just attempting to bring on misery? You know that one Doctor Who episode with that parasite-god-planet-thingy, where the famous Speech to Akhaten was recited?
What if there are different breeds of Dreamons, and Tubbo and Fundy (it was Fundy right? I haven’t been able to watch the Dreamon Hunter VOD yet-) just hadn’t found that out?
Say there are Dreamons based around good dreams, and then those based on Nightmares?
The good Dreamons feed on happiness and togetherness, like what a family typically strives for, while the Nightmare!Dreamon feeds on misery and loneliness?
Dream’s one goal is to feed, and to gain the power of a god - what better way to do that than to gather the most powerful and yet most beautifully tragic people in the entire world, and hide them away in your own little pocket dimension!
The constant derealization and messages and allusions to insomnia could be people on the outside, or even gods on the outside, attempting to bring them home. It would explain the common bad memory, the constant trauma, and why most of them just listened to Dream. He controls the world, which means he can control what happens within it.
