I wish you could write a fic where Maria Hill became director of Shield after Nick's "death" and who attended the funeral
(I hope I did what you wanted, I wasnât sure to understand the last part.)
âThe path of therighteous manâŠâ Sheâs chosen the words herself, a little jokebetween Nick and her that no one else could really understand. Not alot of persons attended the funerals. Most of those who might havecouldnât make it. A lot of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents where still outthere, running to avoid getting caught and interrogated by the U.S.government, or looking for more Hydra agent on the loose after thefall of S.H.I.E.L.D. She didnât mind and Nick probably didnâtmind either. He was there too, in disguise, claiming to anyone whoâdask that he was Jake Fury, his own brother. Many didnât even knowFury had had a brother, and that was for the better. Jake wasnât apleasant guy, and if theyâd knew about him theyâd also know thathe couldnât walk freely at his brotherâs funerals. But after all, that was all classified.
âMs. Hill.â
She turned to facenone other than the World Security Council, all members here, all ofthem wearing black as if they really were mourning Fury. Mariacouldnât stand them. There had been a time where sheâd thoughtshe could trust them, but sheâd only been their puppet.
âAll ourcondolences. We know youâd started to like Fury.â She wants tolaugh. What a joke. They knew the truth. She didnât like it butthey knew it. Theyâd been saved by Fury himself but of coursetheyâd played along. Fury off the picture, wasnât it all theyâdalways wanted?
âIâm alright. Itmight be better like that. Heâd go crazy, watching what he workedso long to maintain suddenly falling apart. And I guess youâre nottoo sad about it. Wasnât getting rid of Fury what you wished for, three years ago?â
âYou know wedidnât want that. That was a mere disagreement.â
âSuch adisagreement that you thought you could take a still young agent andput her in a position of power.â Her voice was cold, but her smilewas still polite, and if you didnât listen to what she was saying, you could just think they were remembering good memories of Fury.âToo bad for you, you chose the wrong agent. I wasnât asdependent from you as you thought, wasnât I?â
They didnât answer. They know she was right. Theyâd put her where she was, stuffed herbrain with ideas about Fury that would make her question everything. They wanted Fury to make a mistake and for her to report it. Butafter Manhattan? She trusted that man more than a council whose onlysolution to problems was to nuke a town.
âWeâre herebecause we have an offer for you.â Of course they had. Theywouldnât be there if they didnât.
âI know whatyouâre going to propose. And itâs a no. S.H.I.E.L.D. is dead andfor real. I donât answer to you anymore. And I suspect after suchdisasters, no one ever will.â Maria turned and walked to theopposite of the room, but she still heard Councilman Rockwell tellingher:
âNone of this wasour fault.â
âWasnât it?â
She doesnât saymore than that, she has a speech to give. She barely see the ceremonytake place, none of this is really important. This is all just fake.A fake dead man attending his own funerals, fake crying people whoreally didnât care and fake people only there to take opportunitiesto use the funeral to their own advantage. She watches them go withsome kind of relief. Sheâs done with this.
âNot easy, uh?Starkâs funerals werenât much better. Carterâs will probably bea bit better, though. Sheâs loved for real, at least.â
She looks at Nick, who just left Captain America, whoâs still near the grave. Maria iswatching them from a distance. Not that she doesnât want to jointhem, but she knows Steve. She knows heâll read in her, somehow.Heâs always been that good with people, as soon as nothing else wasclouding his opinions.
âThe Councilwanted to propose me to lead S.H.I.E.L.D.â
âTheyâre a bitlate then. They usually are. Not able to see anything before itâsright in front of their eyes.â
Maria shrugs. It wasbetter like that. The less they saw, the less theyâd bother her.Not that she cared. But she didnât want to lose time with them. Shelooked at Fury. Was she going to be able to continue what heâddone? What Stark and Carter did? No. Probably not. She didnât evenwant to. What the three of them had had been corrupted by Hydra fromthe start. She would try and do better. Maybe the others wouldnâtunderstand. Maybe will she be seen as a massive bitch who doeswhatever she wants. She didnât really care. This was bigger thanher. This was a fight that had been fought for decades, and she wasno one but the woman who would do everything to put an end to it.
âSo, you ready,Director?â Fury asked, a hand on her shoulder to show his support.
âTo give hell toHydra and the kind? I was born ready for it.â
