Mixing greys - anachromatic scale

An anachromatic scale is one which has no trace of colour.

I worked in a sequence from white to black, in order to form a tonal scale. I did this a few times, trying out different numbers of shades until I thought I had created what shows a clear tonal progression.

I found neautral grey at the half way point of my scale and applied this shade to two small pieces of paper. I placed one at each end of my scale.

The effect of this is that beside the white, my neutral gray looks dark in comparison and beside the black it looks light in comparison. The juxtaposition alters the way we see tone.

I used this neutral gray mix to prepare some paper for the next exercises which use colour.
