Chapter 1 ~ Juliet
Mr. Ren did not stop talking. He was like the thing that wouldnât shut up. And the worst part was, he didnât seem to feel anything ever. His voice was monotoned and his face was that of very few expressions.Â
I decided to zone out of his robotic speaking for a while and started to make a paper airplane. I only looked up when someone sneezed, and the boy beside her said bless you before I could.
Talia Deen, the girl who sneezed, was sitting in front of me and a few seats to the left. She seemed to be doing the same thing I was, a pencil was in her hand and she was absorbed in her math book. Only when she turned the page I saw that she wasnât doing math at all, and doodles covered every white space on the page.
Emerson McAvoy, the boy who said bless you, had his head in his hands and looked as if he was trying very hard to stay awake. I didnât blame him.
I made the final fold on my paper plane, then casually positioned it in my hand. I aimed for Mr. Renâs overly large nose and threw it, trying to stay as unnoticed as possible. Not that it mattered, everyone was too bored to notice, and the people that did didnât care, so I was pretty much safe. My creation was soaring perfectly on course, and for a joyful (or terrifying, I couldnât tell) moment, it looked like I was actually going to hit my target.
Then the nose of the plane took a sudden dive into dark brown hair. A boy that I had yet to discover the name of turned around looking confused and angry and I gave him a guilty look.
âSorry,â I mouthed.
Finally the bell rang and half the class was out of the room already, dying to escape from Mr. Renâs lectures. âDonât forget,â he called, âtomorrow we are having a new student so I need you all to make her feel welcome!â
I grabbed my stuff and followed the crowd out of the room, sighing. The last thing I needed was yet another person in this hell hole of a school.Â
Emma Black approached me at my locker.
âExcited for the new kid, Ju-Ju?â She asked, leaning against the locker beside mine and crossing her arms. âThink youâre going to be the best of friends?â
I rolled my eyes. âMove out of my way, Emma, before your friends have a cow.â Emmaâs two best friends were down the hall squealing for her to hurry up. She looked at me for a second before walking away.
I packed my stuff into my locker, with an odd feeling someone was watching me. I looked up and saw Emerson staring at me with a look that was almost sad. I gave him a sad smile in return. He looked away and shut his locker quickly with a glance at his hands before hurrying down the hallway. I sighed and headed home, alone.
