"Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman: reaction
Neil Postman's, eye-opening, engaging book (or rather a social-crisis warning) gave me a whole new perspective on our culture and the true problems that surround us. Amusing Ourselves to Death goes into the effects television has on our politics, religion, and our public discourse. The book was written in 1985 and at that time TV was becoming the new medium for finding out all information. While I initially thought he's ideas would be outdated, many of the ideals Postman talks about are very applicable in today's internet-obsessed world. What really struck me was Postman's argument that America is centered around entertainment and the only way to keep our attention is to captivate us (for no longer than a few seconds). While this may not sound like the worst thing in the world, it is. Our culture is losing it's seriousness and everything including politics, schools, and religion is following a theatrical setting. Political campaigns have become glorified beauty contests, Schools are teaching lessons based off the TV culture and so do churches.
