In 1888, John Waterhouse, a pre-Raphaelite in a revolt against limited imagination, painted The Lady of Shalott. In painting the portrait of Tennyson’s poem, he said that portraits had no medium. You can seek beauty elsewhere. The Lady of Shalott went and died seeking beauty elsewhere.
Auden wrote Musée des Beaux Arts to make portraits out of what Brueghel didn’t. It is not a portrait, Icarus says, only his feet in the sea on an indifferent day. Auden argues that to look away is to have given attention. It is a portrait. It is always a portrait.
And then there is Browning. His last Duchess painted on the wall was an onset of traumatic poetry. Browning could paint a portrait that didn’t exist. Portraits were only ever meant to immortalise. If it means anything to have found portraits in paintings and poetry, it is to have found ourselves. It is saying that if, for a brief moment, we can be portraits, it will all have been worth it.
