PETITION TO DEFEND THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS OF THE YOREME INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN MEXICO

WE OPPOSE THE ILLEGAL CONSTRUCTION OF A SWISS-GERMAN FINANCED AMMONIA PLANT IN OHUIRA BAY, SINALOA, MEXICO

A Swiss-German company called Proman, through its Mexican subsidiary Gas y Petroquímica de Occidente (GPO), is building the largest ammonia plant in Latin America right in Topolobampo's Ohuira Bay in Sinaloa, Mexico, producing 2,200 tonnes of ammonia daily, using techniques that are actually banned in the European Union. The German bank KfW IPEX-Bank is financing it to the tune of $860 million dollars.

The project will endanger the lives of people within a 15 km radius, destroy the coastal marine ecosystem, and threaten the ancestral culture of the indigenous Yoreme people. Nine UN special rapporteurs have sent letters to the Mexican government, to GPO, and to both the German and Swiss governments expressing serious concern about the environmental and human impact.

Obviously in the movie and book it is seen (the xenonite) as solid. HOWEVER, I raise you this:

Rocky’s suit, ball, and enclosure he made in the Hail Mary leak in oxygen but not enough to cause any physical harm. So Rocky slowly acclimates to oxygen and can still be in ammonia too!

For better context: xenon is a gas (as stated in life lmao) but since Rocky made it into a “solid” it protected him, right? WRONG. Small oxygen particles manage to get through the high densely packed xenon particles every now and again! Grace never questioned if the rooms smelled funky because he just figured he needed to clean (aka ammonia slipping through too).

One day on the Hail Mary one of the panels broke in the lab, and Rocky tumbled out. Obviously both panic due to the smell and temperature change, UNTIL they realize…Rocky isn’t dying. Grace had to leave the room due to the ammonia but was able to watch from a distance!

New catalyst unlocks carbon-free ammonia heat for steel, cement and chemicals

A single-atom platinum catalyst lights ammonia at 200 °C and keeps it burning steadily at 1,100 °C with low NOx, generating high-grade, carbon-free heat for steel, cement and chemicals. Ammonia is a tempting fuel for the world's hottest jobs. It can be made from air, water and renewable electricity, stored as a liquid and shipped using know-how industry already has. However, the snag is that it is stubborn to ignite, burns sluggishly and tends to spew nitrogen oxides (NOx) when pushed to high temperatures. That mix has kept heavy industry—where high-grade heat is non-negotiable—tethered to fossil fuels.

The air around us contains a powerful solution for making agriculture more sustainable. Researchers at Stanford University and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia have developed a prototype device that can produce ammonia – a key fertilizer ingredient – using wind energy to draw air through a mesh. The approach they developed, if perfected, might eliminate the need for a century-old method that produces ammonia by combining nitrogen and hydrogen at high pressures and temperatures. The older method consumes 2% of global energy and contributes 1% of annual carbon dioxide emissions from its reliance on natural gas. The study, published Dec. 13 in Science Advances, involved the first on-site – rather than in a lab – demonstration of the technology. The researchers envision someday integrating the device into irrigation systems, enabling farmers to generate fertilizer directly from the air.
