An Ames room is an optical illusion that makes people or objects appear to change size when they move across the room. It is a distorted room that looks like a normal rectangular room from a certain viewpoint, but is actually trapezoidal and slanted. It was invented by American scientist Adelbert Ames Jr. in 1946, based on the idea of German scientist Hermann von Helmholtz.

The Illusion of an "Ames Room".
The room, viewed through a single peep hole, is seemingly regular and rectangular in shape. The true shape, however, has one side of the room much further back than the other. As a result, figures in each respective corner of the room are entirely different distances from the viewer, providing a grossly different perspective.
