When the popularity of folk music re-surged with the increase in college attendants, the music industry attempted to take advantage of the shift in taste by creating bands like the New Christy Minstrels.  This band was pretty much an egregious mistake all around since their essence went against pretty much everything that folk music stood for.  The Minstrels were all straight, white, upper-class, and politically disinterested.

Considered to have been a “disciple” of Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger was another champion of early American folk music.  Seeger believed in the power of music education so he would teach audiences the words to his verses before he sang them during live performances.  He also produced banjo and guitar manuals, and pioneered musicians’ unions.  

Renowned as the godfather of American folk music, Woody Guthrie was heavily inspired by his teenage experience of traversing through the Southwest region of the country during the height of the Dust Bowl.  Guthrie was a proponent of worker’s rights, equality, and Communism - as reflected by his aversion towards private property which surfaces in the 4th verse of “This Land is Your Land.”
