The Anansi Totem
(A possible reason why Amaya could’ve lost control of it, an explanation for why, or more accurately how, the totem suddenly grew more powerful.)
So I was looking at this gifset again, and I was incredibly off-put by how un-Amaya-like that final smile is. Like, even if it’s for a very good reason, the expression looks so out of place on her.
And then I had the thought: What if that’s because it isn’t her?
And no, I’m not talking about a demonic possession or something like that. Bear with me here for a little while.
I can’t remember if it’s ever called such by name, but the totem around Amaya’s neck is called the Anansi totem, so named for the African trickster god who possesses the ability to shapeshift, but is most often seen in the form of a spider.
When I reblogged that gifset, I put in the tags of another post about it ‘#//she looks like a disrespected goddess doling out punishment and it is /amazing/ #//because that's essentially what she is in this scene’.
And that’s when I had the thought: What if she looks so much like one because she is one in that moment?
What if that slasher smile on her face isn’t Amaya drawing pleasure from what’s happening in that moment (though I’m sure some part of her does feel that way) but Anansi?
What if he gifted her some of his power, and that’s part of why the totem has grown so much stronger?
Just something to consider, and a theory I’m 100% in support of.
