#3202 - Maireana carnosa - Cottony Bluebush
Photo by Loxley Febec on iNat - the photos we took weren't very sharp, but clearly showed the very odd structure of the plant.
Described in 1849 by French naturalist Alfred Moquin-Tandon as Echinopsilon carnosus. 'carnosus' means 'fleshy' and while the plant has a number of adaptations against water loss, most notably the wool, other Bluebushes are much more succulent. Oddly enough the genus Maireana was first delineated in 1840 by the same botanist, but this species didn't get moved into it until 1975.
Named to honour Joseph François Maire (1780–1867), an amateur botanist who befriended Moquin-Tandon during the author's first visit to Paris in 1834.
An Amaranth native to the drier parts of the Australian mainland, but much more common in Western Australia than elsewhere. Growing in sand, clay, and loam, but only where the ground is saline.
There are almost 60 species of Bluebush in Australia, all endemic, and range from herbaceous to woody perennials to small shrubs.

Ptilotus rotundifolius
This little plant is notable for its felted gray leaves and its feathery heads of purplish-pink tubular flowers. It comes from the winter-rainfall region in Western Australia, and it belongs to the Amaranth Family.

Achyranthes splendens (Ahinahina in Hawaiian) is an endangered Hawaiian endemic plant in the same family as amaranth. This species occurs only on the Hawaiian islands, growing at low to moderate altitudes typically along western and southern coasts in relatively dry habitats. While the inflorescence I had to photograph is missing flowers (they fall off pretty rapidly and easily) the flowers when blooming are light green and barely distinct from the rest of the inflorescence without quite close inspection. They are not as much appreciated for the flowers as they are for the beautiful tomentose foliage which presents a shifting metallic sheen overlaying the green leaf tissue. Sadly, like many Hawaiian plants, this easily-grown species is still threatened by habitat loss, and with its decreasing population may follow in the steps of its relative Achyranthes atollensis which was made extinct through civilian and military development in 1964.
