She closed the door behind her, and stared at Cain.

     His face was pressed into his pillow, blankets kicked onto the floor, and his Halloween costume still tightly hugging his hips. He reeked of alcohol, pizza, and new car air freshener. At the end of his bed, his familiar, Francis the Shiba Inu, slept, his face tucked between Cain’s feet. It wasn’t a necessarily surprising image for the holiday morning.

     “Cain! Wake up!” she yelled.

     “Wha—!” He yelped as he rolled off the bed. Francis perked up, barking. Cain eyed his digital clock, then glared at her. “Amantha. What the hell are you doing waking me up at six fifteen in the morning? I didn’t get to sleep until two hours ago!”

     “We finished up at one,” she pointed out.

     “I know it’s a surprise to hear this, but I actually have a life outside of your petty disputes and hexing, dear Ammy.” He let his face fall into the blankets.

     She sat down next to him, petting Francis on the nose. “About my petty disputes and hexing… that’s why I’m here.”

     “What’d you do?”

     “It’s undetermined if I did anything at all, actually.”

     “Amantha…”

     She sighed, covering her face with her hands. “I think I really screwed up, Cain. Like, colossally screwed up. Lily-Rose told Becraft that Stacy has been missing all night long. She didn’t show up to her meeting this morning, for obvious reasons. That was the plan. But I imagined her sick in bed with bad visions for the rest of the day! Not scorch marks or broken mirrors or blood! Not for her to be gone altogether!”

     He sat up and grabbed her hand. “All right. That obviously doesn’t sound good, but I’m not going to tell you I told you so, because it won’t help anything. But Amantha, you don’t know anything yet. Maybe Stacy just suspects you gave her hallucinations and she’s pulling some elaborate ruse. Or maybe it’s just nothing. Just don’t tell Becraft or anyone else but Sinclair or Eran, okay?”

      “Obviously,” she said, wiping her cheeks. “But yeah. You’re right. We don’t know anything yet. She could have just pulled some weird scene. A trick, maybe. On the bright side, I get to deliver the speech during prayer today.”

      “At least that part worked,” he said. “Now, we still have three hours until I need to be ready for prayer, and I would very much appreciate being left to myself so I can get some rest.”

     “Okay, I’ll just leave then,” she said, standing and crossing her arms. “Because my own brother—my flesh and blood—hates me and wishes me gone from existence for all eternity. Fine! I hate you, too! Just die then.”

     “Great,” he said, jumping back into bed with blankets over his shoulders. “Shut the door on your way out?”

     “No,” she answered, closing the door behind her.

Ah. The sweet bond of a brother and sister.
