Okay basically

Cullen, Knight Commander (Reyhan Lord of the Abzan):

Card effect chosen as it requires the player to shuffle counters around to other creatures in response to the loss of a creature - much like a commander must adapt to the loss of soldiers in the field to bolster the surviving forces (Fall of Haven, anyone?)

While his mana cost doesn't directly relate to his own lore, it DOES relate to Amalthea's. Green for the anchor, and Black as a representation of her declining mental health and the deaths that she feels she is responsible for.

Amalthea, Herald of Andraste (Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful):

Card effect chosen as she feels safer and stronger in the presence of others. Alone, she feels weak and unable to face the unsurmountable odds of saving the world. When others are on the field, she feels stronger, and is able to do better.

Amalthea's mana cost is also not reflective of her own lore, and is closer aligned to Cullen's! White for the light at the end of the tunnel, as Cullen works to be a better person and free from his lyrium addiction and make right for his past mistakes.
